Tom Macartney ( - )

Tom Macartney was born in China and committed his life to the Lord as a teenager at an English Boarding School. As a family man living in London, he served the Lord in the teaching profession. He was a faithful man of God for whom Christ was his life. He was a student of the Bible. He had a gift for expressing profound truth in simple terms both in the spoken and written word.

Along with his own illustrations and charts, he frequently used the allegorical stories of John Bunyan and the writings of A.W. Tozer, as well as picture slide presentations to aid understanding. As an evangelist he longed for people, including children, to become true disciples of Jesus. As a pastor/teacher he sought to help people grow in their faith, grounded in the truth.

A Great Warfare

Introduction The great warfare of which Daniel writes (Dan. 10:1) is an eternal warfare. It did not begin with Daniel, nor did it end with him. The Bible discloses that this war began before man was found on the earth, and long before man became involved in it; and every true child of God knows that... Read More

A Great Warfare - Part 2

How the enemy loves to see us in this pit of passivity, frightened to do anything lest perchance we should move in the flesh, constantly trying to analyse ourselves to see whether we are in the flesh or in the Spirit. We may be quite as useless to the Lord in our futile passivity as in our fleshly a... Read More

A Kingdom that cannot be shaken

“But He has promised, ‘Yet once more and only once, will I shake the heavens and the earth … and I will shake all nations; and the Desire of all nations shall come …’ These words, ‘Yet once more’, indicate the removal of what can be shaken – that is, created, temporal things – so that what cannot be... A tree planted by the water

“This is what the Lord says: Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose confidence is in Him. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, that spreads out its roots by the river. It shall not fear when heat comes, but its leaves shall be evergreen; it shall have no worries in the yea... Read More

Caleb the Wholehearted and the Land of Promise

When we read Paul’s letters it is impossible not to note a deep concern running through them that Christians should realise the greatness of their salvation, the glorious destiny to which they have been called and the infinite resources which are theirs to meet present needs. Consider, for example, ... Read More

Can you afford it?

Can you afford to neglect the Bible? Just supposing it is true in spite of all its critics say. Most people have never bothered to read it carefully to find out its message for themselves. Have you? Many have not opened a Bible since they left school, and only vaguely remember a few well-known stori... Read More

Dead or alive?

Jesus said: “I solemnly assure you, whoever hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life. He will not be judged, but has already passed from death to life. The time is coming—has already come—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live … the tim... Read More

Fear not … Be strong …

The fact that the words, “Fear not…Be strong”, (and similar ones), occur so often throughout the scriptures, indicates that the spirit of fearfulness (anxiety, worry, timidity), and the spirit of weakness (defeatism, giving in, giving up, compromise), are two of our greatest enemies, as Christians. ... Giving the Lord His place

This holy concentration can also be clearly seen, for example, in the lives of David and Paul, but first let us note it in the life of the Lord Jesus Himself. It is impressive and significant that His ministry began and ended with a cleansing of the temple. Twice He cleansed His Father’s house, as i... Read More

God cares

It is a sad world we live in, and it is our fault. Yet, while we have abandoned God, He has not abandoned us! The fact is that God cares tremendously about our human predicament. From beginning to end the Bible declares this. The cross proves this. While we have forfeited any claim on God by going o... Read More

… and God is great and good, holy and loving, faithful and true! How amazing that He is also interested in us, even though most people do not realise it. I wonder what your reaction is to the mention of God? Perhaps you do not want to face the disturbing fact that there is a God to whom you will hav... Read More

God is greater

God is greater than our enemies: the world, the flesh and the devil One of the most encouraging verses in the Bible is 1 John 4:4, “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world”. This is a verse we need today. It tells of God’s overwhelming superiority over all His foes and ours. John is ... Read More

God is my King

Our most urgent need today as Christians is to see the One whom Isaiah saw in the temple and John on Patmos, the overwhelming majesty of God in the face of Jesus Christ, and then know this Christ, who reigns in highest heaven, reigning in our hearts in reality and power and in His church in all her ... How to become a Christian

1. Admit that you have sinned. “For all have sinned.” “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:8 Your sin separates you from God and leads to death. “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5 “For the wages of sin is death.... I am the bright Morning Star

This remarkable Title is the last in the Bible taken by the glorified Lord Jesus, and therefore must have some special significance. In thinking about it we shall concentrate on the central issue to be found in three verses and their contexts (Rev.22:1; 2:28; 2 Pet. 1:19). Here we shall find both en... Read More

Keeping the faith of Jesus

These must surely be among the most moving words ever penned, for they are the words of an innocent old man in a Roman dungeon awaiting his execution. Knowing and serving the Lord in a day of crisis

Daniel himself lived through such a time of crisis. At the time when he was deported to Babylon in 605 BC, Babylon had just conquered Assyria, defeated Egypt and become the dominant power in the Middle East. By the end of his long life, Babylon itself had been conquered by Persia. But more important... Read More

Signposts to the reality of the church

Many today are concerned about the obvious unreality of much of our church life. Although we go through the motions sincerely enough, God often seems to be absent. The vitality and joy of the early Christians is little known. What we find in the Book of the Acts was so obviously real. This concern i... Read More
