A maskil. </h3>44 <poetry>We have heard it with our ears, O God; <indent>our ancestors have told us </indent> what you did in their days, <indent>in days long ago. </indent> </poetry> 2 <poetry>With your hand you drove out the nations <indent>and planted our ancestors;</indent> you crushed the peoples <indent>and made our ancestors flourish. </indent> </poetry> 3 <poetry>It was not by their sword that they won the land, <indent>nor did their arm bring them victory;</indent> it was your right hand, your arm, <indent>and the light of your face, for you loved them.</indent></poetry> 4 <poetry>You are my King and my God, <indent>who decrees victories for Jacob.</indent> </poetry> 5 <poetry>Through you we push back our enemies; <indent>through your name we trample our foes.</indent> </poetry> 6 <poetry>I put no trust in my bow, <indent>my sword does not bring me victory;</indent> </poetry> 7 <poetry>but you give us victory over our enemies, <indent>you put our adversaries to shame. </indent> </poetry> 8 <poetry>In God we make our boast all day long, <indent>and we will praise your name forever. </indent></poetry> 9 <poetry>But now you have rejected and humbled us; <indent>you no longer go out with our armies. </indent> </poetry> 10 <poetry>You made us retreat before the enemy, <indent>and our adversaries have plundered us.</indent> </poetry> 11 <poetry>You gave us up to be devoured like sheep <indent>and have scattered us among the nations. </indent> </poetry> 12 <poetry>You sold your people for a pittance, <indent>gaining nothing from their sale.</indent></poetry> 13 <poetry>You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, <indent>the scorn and derision of those around us.</indent> </poetry> 14 <poetry>You have made us a byword among the nations; <indent>the peoples shake their heads at us.</indent> </poetry> 15 <poetry>I live in disgrace all day long, <indent>and my face is covered with shame </indent> </poetry> 16 <poetry>at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, <indent>because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge. </indent></poetry> 17 <poetry>All this came upon us, <indent>though we had not forgotten you;</indent> <indent>we had not been false to your covenant.</indent> </poetry>
