A psalm of David.</h3>39 <poetry>I said, “I will watch my ways <indent>and keep my tongue from sin; </indent> I will put a muzzle on my mouth <indent>while in the presence of the wicked.”</indent> </poetry> 2 <poetry>So I remained utterly silent, <indent>not even saying anything good.</indent> But my anguish increased; </poetry> 3 <poetry>    my heart grew hot within me.</indent> While I meditated, the fire burned; <indent>then I spoke with my tongue:</indent></poetry> 4 <poetry>“Show me, <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, my life’s end <indent>and the number of my days; </indent> <indent>let me know how fleeting my life is. </indent> </poetry> 5 <poetry>You have made my days a mere handbreadth; <indent>the span of my years is as nothing before you.</indent> Everyone is but a breath, <indent>even those who seem secure. </indent></poetry> 6 <poetry>“Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; <indent>in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth </indent> <indent>without knowing whose it will finally be. </indent></poetry> 7 <poetry>“But now, Lord, what do I look for? <indent>My hope is in you. </indent> </poetry> 8 <poetry>Save me from all my transgressions; <indent>do not make me the scorn of fools.</indent> </poetry> 9 <poetry>I was silent; I would not open my mouth, <indent>for you are the one who has done this. </indent> </poetry> 10 <poetry>Remove your scourge from me; <indent>I am overcome by the blow of your hand. </indent> </poetry> 11 <poetry>When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin, <indent>you consume their wealth like a moth —</indent> <indent>surely everyone is but a breath. </indent></poetry> 12 <poetry>“Hear my prayer, <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>listen to my cry for help; </indent> <indent>do not be deaf to my weeping. </indent> I dwell with you as a foreigner, <indent>a stranger, as all my ancestors were. </indent> </poetry> 13 <poetry>Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again <indent>before I depart and am no more.” </indent></poetry> <h3>Psalm 40 </h3><h3>For the director of music.
