John 2:1-5:  Are you obeying or rebelling?  Are you thinking, speaking, and living according to God?

Sermon Sentence: John the Baptizer was born to witness and prepare for Jesus, so that we might believe and bear witness (1:6-8). 
 
John 1:6-51 is about Jesus and John’s testimony. It begins with John the Baptizer. So many Johns, I wish they had last names, but this refers to John the Baptizer, not to be confused with John the Apostle, writer of the Gospel of John. 
 
I. “Sent by God” (1:6) God is in charge & sovereign – involved in human history 
 1. God is active, involved in history, life, daily moments (John 5:15) 
 2. Destiny for John (expounded fuller in Luke 1:5-25 Zacharias & Elizabeth with Luke 1:39-45 Elizabeth & Mary) like God’s destiny for the OT prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:5) 
 3. Also true 4 YOU: destiny for you . . . adopted child of God on mission for God’s Kingdom 
 
II. “For a witness” “might bear witness” (1:7-8) 
 1. “Martureo” = witness/testify/report from which we get the word MARTYR (dying for something you believe) 
 2. John was a witness/martyr 
 
III. “All might believe” (1:7) Why? Why did God provide a destiny? Why did John bear witness to the point of death? So that others may believe. 
 1. Reaching people! God’s method is to use people’s witness to the point of death. Who are you witnessing to and how are you witnessing? Mission and here: lots of methods for various situations, radical lifestyle, godliness (selfless, sacrificial, submissive, surrendered), and spoken, organic conversations (introductions, small talk, concern, prayer – showing love, speaking love, being love) 
 a. Pray for discernment & opportunities 
 b. Be available (especially when they are hurting) 
 c. Do selfless acts of service 
 d. Pray for the lost around you, by name, in persistence
