I. FAITHLESS PEOPLE - John 4:43-46a 
1. Jesus’ Return to the Mission – much more work to be done elsewhere 
2. Jesus’ Reputation Among the Jews – many curious, not yet believing (like Nicodemus) 3. Jesus’ Rejection by His Own People – even the Samaritans believed – although Galileans welcomed him, they didn’t believe in Him 
 
Those Who Reject The Lord 
- Isaiah 1:2-4 | Listen, heavens, and pay attention, earth, for the Lord has spoken: “I have raised children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. 3 The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s feeding trough, but Israel does not know; my people do not understand.” 4 Oh sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, brood of evildoers, depraved children! They have abandoned the Lord; they have despised the Holy One of Israel; they have turned their backs on him. 
- Matthew 23:37 | “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 38 See, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!” 
- Revelation 21:7-8 | The one who conquers will inherit these things, and I will be his God, and he will be my son. 8 But the cowards, faithless, detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars—their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” 
 
II. WORDS AND MIRACLES - John 4:46b-50 
1. A Father in Desperation – official of King Herod - all earthly means, but this was impossible 2. A Far Away City - Capernaum was 16 miles away from Galilee, eventually was HQ for ministry 3. A Frail Son – terminal illness, probably had the best healthcare, but not enough 
4. A Faithless People – unless they saw signs, they wouldn’t believe 
5. A Faithful Savior – despite their unbelief, he had compassion on the man’s simple faith – healed at a distance 
 
Disease, Death, Decay 
1. Death is not normal. – a curse, started by satan, and followed by Adam 
2. Suffering shows our humanity – frail, helpless, truly finite 
3. Our only hope is in Jesus – let our suffering bring us to Christ – who Himself suffered 4. Our story can help others in their suffering – God can use what is evil for good 
 
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 | Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. 6 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that as you share in the sufferings, so you will also share in the comfort. 
 
II. PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL HEALING - John 4:51-54 
1. Fatigued Father – had traveled 16 miles (8 hours walking), 5am – 1pm, overnight stay in an inn 2. Cheerful Communication – the boy lives! Jesus answered their prayer and petition 
3. Powerful Precision – miracle wasn’t pulling his leg, or emotional excitement, it was precise 
4. Absolute Acceptance – from “come and see” belief, to real faith as the Messiah – faith family 
 
Physical Healing 
1. God is sovereign over it. – Paul’s thorn in the flesh: my grace is enough... 
2. God used it to validate His authority. 
3. God commands us to pray for it. 
James 5:13-15 | Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises. 14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 
4. God will eternally grant it in The Kingdom. 
 
Spiritual Healing 
1. God is sovereign over it. – He saves whom He wills. 
2. Of more eternal importance than physical healing. – our bodies will fade, but our soul will live 3. Provided for on the Cross. – Jesus died to heal our soul, he lives to save our soul.

SERMON NOTES: 
 
Psalm 56:13 | For you rescued me from death, even my feet from stumbling, to walk before God (coram deo in the latin vulgate) in the light of life. 
 
We live public lives before God. There is no private life. There is no separation of Christian and “other”. There is nothing in us that does not belong to God or that God can’t see. 
Based on that fact, Paul instructs Timothy regarding the public matters of the faith. 
 
1. Public Praise 
1 Timothy 5:17-18 | The elders who are good leaders are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says: Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain, and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.” 
• “Pastor” is near the bottom of the survey for trusted people, just above car salesman. 
• 72% of pastors work between 55 – 75 hours per week. 
• 66% give, but do not have counseling for themselves or their families. 
• 71% churches have no plan for their pastor to have a period of Sabbatical. 
• 1,500 pastors leave ministry yearly, 1300 fired by their church without biblical cause 
 
3 Ways to Care for Other Christians 
1. Spiritually – pray for them, share Scripture with them, get them Bible study tools. 
2. Emotionally – ask how it’s going, understand they are sinners like us, let them open up. 
3. Practically – clothing, food, finances, allow room for rest. 
James 2:14-16 | What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it? 
 
2. Correct Church Discipline 
1 Timothy 5:19-23 | Don’t accept an accusation against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses. 20 Publicly rebuke those who sin, so that the rest will be afraid. 21 I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels to observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing out of favoritism. 22 Don’t be too quick to appoint anyone as an elder, and don’t share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. 23 Don’t continue drinking only water, but use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. 
 
3 Objections: 1. It is unloving 2. It’s none of our business 3. We shouldn’t judge 
What it is: Process of Biblical restoration to fellowship with God and the Church. 
What it is not: Abusive leaders exerting unbiblical authority over The Church. Vengeance. 
 
Pre-Requisites to Church Discipline 
Matthew 7:1-5 | “Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use. 3 Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s eye. 6 Don’t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces. 
 
NOTE: Don’t share in the same sin. Church Discipline is not for unbelievers. No favoritism. 
Jesus instructions for Church Discipline – See 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 for example of it. 
Matthew 18:12-22 | Leave the 99 to go get the 1 astray 
 
3 Steps: 1. One on One. 2. Two or Three Witnesses. 3. In front of the Church. 4. Exclusion 
What if we don’t practice it? : 1. Not a Biblical Church. 2. Sin will prevail and spread. 3. We don’t love our brothers and sisters. 4. A low-view of God and holiness. 
 
3. Secret Sin 
1 Timothy 5:24 | Some people’s sins are obvious, preceding them to judgment, but the sins of others surface later. 
5 Ways to Walk in The Light 
1. Real confession to God. 2. Confession to trustworthy brothers. 3. Call sin what it is. 4. Make no provision for the flesh. 5. Be filled with The Word, and obey it. 
4. Good Works 
1 Timothy 5:25 | Likewise, good works are obvious, and those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden. 
 
1 John 1:5-10 
 
Public praise of those who do good work, and proper church discipline ensure that God’s Church is holy, hard-working, obedient, growing, and pleasing to God.

Wisdom For Women | 1 Timothy 5:1-16 | Week 11 
 
Genesis teaches, and Jesus later reaffirms that, God made humans male and female. Although we are equal in worth, value, and dignity, there are distinctions. Paul here instructs Timothy, and all men and women, on how women are to be served and treated as well as 
how they are to live their Christian lives. 
 
• Women make up 60% of church-goers statistically. 
• Single motherhood rate in USA is 68% - US Census Bureau 
• OT and NT widows in pagan cultures: poverty, abuse, death. God cares for widows. 
 
Wisdom For Widows / Older Women 
1 Timothy 5:3-4| Support widows who are genuinely in need. 4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn to practice godliness toward their own family first and to repay their parents, for this pleases God. 
 
1 Timothy 5:9-10 | No widow is to be enrolled on the list for support unless she is at least sixty years old, has been the wife of one husband, 10 and is well known for good works—that is, if she has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the saints’ feet, helped the afflicted, and devoted herself to every good work. 
 
A. Devoted to Their Husband 
1. Given over to him. 
2. Following his leadership. 
3. Making decisions together. 
4. Building a home. 
 
B. Devoted to Good Works 
1. Hospitality. 
2.Teaching the younger women. 
3. Taking on a church ministry without neglecting 1st ministry. 
 
C Devoted to Raising Godly Kids 
1. Loving them, not worshiping them. 
2. Instructing them, not entertaining them. 
3. Disciplining them, not negotiating with them. 
Proverbs 13:24 | The one who will not use the rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently. 
 
3a – Age appropriate discipline. Remind them who you are, you love them, pray with them. 
Proverbs 22:15 | Foolishness is bound to the heart of a youth; a rod of discipline will separate it from him. 
 
4. Evangelizing them, not handing them off. – Timothy’s mom and grandmother. 
5. Reward for doing things God’s way = He will provide for your needs. – v.4 
 
2. Wisdom For Single / Younger Women 
1 Timothy 5:11-12 | But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when they are drawn away from Christ by desire, they want to marry 12 and will therefore receive condemnation because they have renounced their original pledge. 
 
5 Things to do In Your Season of Singleness 
1. Pursue God in His Word. – Jeremiah 29:13 | You will seek me and find me…all your heart. 
2. Surround yourself with Godly women. 
3. Devote yourself to serving. 
4. Find your identity in Christ. 
5. Pray for wisdom and discernment. - Proverbs 4:23 | Guard your heart; all flows from it. 
 
1 Timothy 5:14 | Therefore, I want younger women to marry, have children, manage their households, and give the adversary no opportunity to accuse us. 
 
4 Ways to Prepare for Marriage 
1. Avoid fantasies. 
Proverbs 28:19 | The one who works his land will have plenty of food, but whoever chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty. 
2.1 Timothy 3 as a standard. 
3. Avoid bad advice from bitter women. 
4. Covenant is Key. 
 
3. Rejecting Sin 
1 Timothy 5:6-8 | however, she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives. 7 Command this also, so that they will be above reproach. 
1 Timothy 5:13 | At the same time, they also learn to be idle, going from house to house; they are not only idle, but are also gossips and busybodies, saying things they shouldn’t say. 
1 Timothy 5:15 | For some have already turned away to follow Satan. 
 
1. Rejecting self-indulgence. 
2. Rejecting idleness. 
3. Rejecting gossip and slander. – Proverbs 6:16-19 - read 
4. Pursuing your deepest desires. 
 
4. How We Can Help as Men 
1 Timothy 5:1-2 | Don’t rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters with all purity. 
1 Timothy 5:8 | But if anyone does not provide for his own family, especially for his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 
 
1. Providing Purity. 
2. Giving Grace – 1 Peter 3:7 – understanding your weaker partner. Unhindered prayer. 
3. Providing for our families. 
4. Modeling Submission.
