"I Want More" - 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13 
 
If you think hard enough, I am sure you can think of something you want more of. Can you think of something? Maybe it's not hard at all? Is there a part of you that feels like wanting more of something is a bad thing? In the days of affluent America, don't we already have enough? Maybe..... 
 
Of course the Bible speaks clearly about covetousness and contentment, especially when we talk of material things. But is could wanting more of some things be a good thing? Are there some areas we should never be content with? I think so. 
 
But don't take my word for it! In this last section of 1 Thess 3, Paul wants more. He wants more for Himself and for the people in Thessalonica. He wants them to have more for themselves as well. In fact, this is what he prays for them -- that they would have more! And not just a little more, but a lot more. His pray is in a form of speech that expresses a strong desire or wish. "Oh, I wish you guys could have more!" 
 
The real question is.....more of what????? What does Paul want more of? What does he want them to have a lot more of? Isn't that a great question? Are you curious?

"Like A Nursing Mother..." - 1 Thessalonians 2:1-10 
 
It's Mother's Day, and in the wisdom of God He has orchestrated the next passage in 1 Thess to be a perfect fit for the occasion! 
 
Evidently, after Paul left Thessalonica, he was harshly criticized and mischaracterized by people in the city. As a result, Paul recounts things they know about him, but need to remember so they are not swayed from their trust in him and his message. 
 
Paul knew nothing of the celebrity ministry we see much of today, where people of great charisma know how to work the crowd, draw in big bucks and live a lavish lifestyle. In fact, Paul said he was not in it for the money or the glory. He was not the kind of guy to make demands as if he were a hot shot. 
 
When Paul wants to illustrate what ministry should look and feel like, he gives a very descriptive example. The arena of money and fame and celebrity status is the absolutely wrong model for ministry! What is the right one? It's family! 
 
Church is family, and the way we treat each other is a matter of family. SO the picture Paul paints is illustrated by -- you guessed it -- a nursing mother!!!! Pastors should care for people with the same attitude as a nursing mother cares for her baby. He also brings "dad" in to the picture as the one who challenges and encourages the children. Together, the mothering and fathering love create a gentle atmosphere where kids are both challenged and cherished!

"That's What Friends are For" - Colossians 4:10-18 
 
"If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together," is a quote that I hear from time to time. I like it. No one seems to agree on the origins, but it resonates nonetheless. 
 
However, it seems there are a lot of people going alone and going nowhere these days. Loneliness and isolation are huge issues for people. Roughly 4 out of 10 people cannot identify a best friend. People have hundreds or thousands of "Facebook friends", but how many of those people will be there for you in a time of need? How many pitch in when you need help. Facebook friendship requires little more than "liking" something that someone posts and maybe commenting as well. But you could be hundreds of miles away and really know little about your "friend". 
 
I am sure there are some positive things that come from those interchanges, but they are no substitute for living, breathing, people that you can call friends. People to celebrate the joys and share the struggles. People who you know will be with you when the chips are down. 
 
As we come to the close of the letter, we read about real people and real relationships in a real world where Paul writes from a real prison. Chained with him is a guy named Aristarchus. And then there is Mark....what a history he and Paul have! And Demas.....that is a heartbreaker. 
 
What do these people tell us about life and friendship? Plenty. To know the specifics, you will have to....

"That's What Friends are For" - Colossians 4:10-18

Check out chapter 2. You can't help but notice key words like "deceive" and "cheat". Throw in being "judged" and you get the gist. Something is rotten, or potentially rotten, in Mudville. The Colossians are in danger of being spiritually scammed!

So, I'll give you some stats, but I don't think you need data to tell you there is a mental health crisis in America. A crisis. It turns out, the Spirit of God has much to say about mental health from a heavenly perspective. Isn't that good news? 
 
Paul did not sit down to give them a pamphlet on mental health. But he was concerned for their well-being as a church and community in relationship. Spiritual life has a intimate connection with mental health, and you are not a helpless victim. We will look at FIVE THINGS that matter regarding mental health, and won't even bill your insurance company! It's free counseling. 
 
Here are some questions to answer before viewing. How would rate your mental health? With a 1 being very poor, and a 5 being amazing, where would you be? How did you even come up with a number? 
 
Are you generally in a good mood or a bad mood most of the time? Do you worry too much? Do you experience a lot of anxiety? Do you spend a lot of time "losing yourself" in social media or entertainment? Do you have unresolved conflict in your life? Are you harboring grudges and holding onto the past? 
 
This final section of Philippians is......amazing! So, grab a notebook and your bible, and lets dive in together.

Imagine a horse, utterly, physically, stretched out, exerting maximum effort on the journey to the finish line! "So what", you might say? 
 
In the next section of Philippians, Paul is illustrating to the church how he sees his past and future. Twice he uses a word that speaks of relentlessly pursuing something in order to grab it and hold onto it. The example is of a runner, or a horse, at full stride with every muscle stretching and pulling with maximal effort. 
 
What is the secret to this kind of life? What is the goal Paul is striving for? There are some real nuggets in this section! You and I will consider where we are right now in our walk, how we should deal with our past, and how to think about the future.

Dressing for Battle - Ephesians 6:14-17 
 
When you are getting dressed to go somewhere, you really have to know where you are going so you know what to wear. Even if the guys don't understand this, I know the ladies will. We have closets full of clothes and shoes for both formal and informal occasions. Yes, the guys do too! Work demands one set of clothes and camping or hiking demand another. War demands a VERY specialized WARdrobe. 
 
Last week we learned what to expect -- attacks from the devil, the Father of lies. This is not a physical war, but spiritual and psychological. It involves the hearts and minds of men and women who want to follow God. There is something happening behind the scenes of planet earth that we have become part of, and its dangerous! 
 
Now that we know what to expect, we can discuss what to wear. Of course this is not literal clothing like a nice dress or a suit and tie. This is the armour of the mind that protects and defends against penetrating lies. 
 
From prison, Paul sees spiritual realities in practical ways. He himself has experienced attacks -- like the fact that he had unanswered prayer regarding a thorn in his flesh (2 Cor 12). He knows the mental strength needed to walk in truth and in love. He knows the violent opposition from Satan to the reality of who God is and what He has done for humanity. 
 
Paul has drawn inspiration from his imagination as he consider the protective armour of the Roman soldier. As he looks at the battle armour, he imagines the things that he relies on to keep him safe from the devil. 
 
What are the pieces of armour? What do they mean? How do we actually "put them on"? These are the questions we will ask, and answer, tomorrow! Understanding Ephesians 6 could be the difference between success and failure in your Christian life!

Calvary Chapel Fluvanna - Revelation 5:8-14 - Mar. 10th, 2021 @ 7:00pm

Revelation 4: "Behold a Throne" 
 
Revelation 4 begins a new section in our study. Having completed the "letters to the churches" in chapters 2 and 3, we move into the last part of the outline we noted in Chapter 1. Remember the outline? John was going to record "the things which you have seen (Ch 1), the things that are (ch 2-3), and the things which will take place after this (ch 4-22). 
 
Having thoroughly studied the "letters to the churches", we will begin to discuss the last section -- things that were future for John, and are future even for us. But actually, ch 4-5 move us from the earthly focus on the church, its problems, and its challenges. The dominant feature of these two chapters is the Heavenly Throne! 
 
Obviously, the picture above is NOT the Throne of God, but the Throne of the Queen of England! Admittedly, a "throne" is not a picture we easily and readily connect with, not living under a monarchy. So we will have to use a little sanctified imagination to connect our hearts with the image of absolute authority, power, and glory throughout most of history. 
 
I encourage you to look over Revelation 4 and 5 before you head to bed tonight. As you do, as yourself the question that I will ask you tomorrow, "Why should I care?" It's so easy to get lost in the details of the glory of the throne, and lose sight of the reason we need to know! 
 
I have to confess that my heart has been heavy regarding the direction, demands, and discussions as people and groups fight for moral and practical dominance. Being reminded about the Throne in Heaven has done my spirit and soul good, and I hope it will do yours good as well!

So, we turn the corner from doctrinal to practical, and from foundational to functional. Building on the prayer at the end of chapter 3, Ephesians 4:1 ties together the first three and last three chapters of this letter. 
 
Are their predictable behaviors that exist in healthy relationships? What are the habits seen in healthy families? If God is love, and Jesus is the truth, is it safe to say that people and families and churches and communities that share the heart and behaviors of God should be healthy and peaceful? 
 
If you want to know what the family of God is meant to be, and how all of the Father's children relate to one another, then you will not want to miss any of the upcoming messages from Ephesians. Now, let usl focus on the way we deal with differences! 
 
How are Americans doing with that? 
 
God's family is not made up of clones. The diversity can be both either glorious or dangerous. It can be useful for all of us to mature together within God's community. But if we miss the heart of God, and misunderstand our differences, then they can be a source of pride, division, tension, and hatred. 
 
Watch how Paul uses the truth about the human body to illustrate his point. Where do you fit into this family? How should we treat each other? What does maturity look like? If you want to know, then.......

PHILADELPHIA: The church that needed to see! 
 
We have almost completed the circuit of the seven churches! We have only two left, so this time we will visit Philadelphia! Now don't think about the Liberty Bell, soft pretzels, and cheesesteaks. Oh man....now I am thinking about them. Did you know I grew up in the suburbs of North Philly? 
 
Instead we are still in ancient Asia Minor, seeing what Jesus says to the church in this ancient city of "brotherly love". This church has the distinction, along with the Church in Smyrna, of escaping any criticism from Jesus. This is more of a "wellness visit" to the eye doctor as opposed to a sick visit to the GP. 
 
Eye doctor? Four times Jesus says to them, "Behold"! That's not a word we use very often in our vocabulary. It is an imperative form of the word that means "to see". It is translated "see", and also "look", both with an exclamation point! When you find something really cool and you know someone else would enjoy it, you say, "Come here and check this out!" That might be the essence. 
 
In a world where we have a hard time focusing, or we can tend to focus on the wrong things, Philadelphia gives us a chance to have our vision checked. What does Jesus want them to see and understand? What encouragement could they receive by seeing it? It's as if Jesus is refocusing their attention to help them endure. 
 
I think you will be blessed and blown away with the message to the church in Philadelphia, Fluvanna and our viewers!

We will pick up in Revelation 2:12-17 and visit the city of Pergamos! 
In standard fashion, Jesus starts with praise for this church that was doing ministry in an interesting place - where Satan's throne was! Jesus wants to make sure we know that, so He mentions it twice. That is scary and exciting all at once! If you wanted to plant or pastor a church, would you choose a place like that!? 
 
Despite their difficult location, it was not an excuse of the problems they were experiencing. This church needed to be CAREFUL! Careful with what? Not their presence in Pergamos, but with their pulpit! There were some things being taught in that church that validated sin and compromise! In fact, if Jesus says there is something He hates, I want to know and avoid it! 
 
Ok, so....what is the medical picture above all about? How is Pergamos the place of Satan's throne? How are these things linked? That's what we will talk about Sunday!

Tonight we continue to wrap our heads around Israel's national leadership in the Book of 2 Kings, chapter 21. In the same breath, I am wondering how many of you considered the present and future of our own national leadership as you watched the Presidential debate last night! 
 
The good news for America is that we elect our leadership, and one President can only serve a maximum of eight years. So, if there is bad leadership, it changes in a relatively short period of time, really. Not so in ancient Judah. 
 
Politically, Israel goes from fantastic under Hezekiah to deplorable under Manasseh. Hezekiah reigned for 29 good years that included spiritual renewal in Judah! Now his son, Manasseh, overturns everything his father had accomplished spiritually and manages to reign for 55 wicked and immoral years without getting assassinated or dethroned! 
 
Manasseh is an occultist and murderer and even sacrifices his own children to idols. Under him the nation takes a turn toward wickedness. While leaders cannot force people to behave a certain way, they can certainly promote good or evil! What's that picture of the king in chains all about anyway? 
 
If you read 2 Kings 21, you only get part of the story. Manasseh's life has a surprising end, but you have to read 2 Chron to find out what happens. No spoiler here. Come on out tonight and let's discover it together!

It's Wednesday again.... 
 
Picture a man who has been robbed, beaten up, and left for dead on the road by a gang. Does that give you a hint as to the Bible reference? We are talking about the Good Samaritan. 
 
"That's great, pastor, but what does the Good Samaritan have to do with 2 Kings 17?" I am glad you asked! You see, Jesus was a master teacher. I think we can agree on that. He used stories and current events to teach spiritual truths about His Father and His Kingdom. What made His stories and examples so powerful, and even sometimes offensive, is that they included unexpected turns and radical ideas. 
 
That a Samaritan is presented as the hero of the story, while the priest and the Levite have failed, is a truly jaw-dropping twist. Why? Because the Jews hated the Samaritans and considered them "half breeds" or "mutts". 
 
Now to 2 Kings 17! How did the Samaritan's get such a bad reputation? What is the history? This is answered in 2 Kings. We are given a picture of a "melting pot" nation that has lost its spiritual identity and is now in a state of religious chaos and confusion that is then passed on to generations to come -- including the Samaritan that is the hero of Jesus' story!

In the National Gallery in London hangs a Rembrandt painting called "Belshazzar's Feast". No, the picture I included above is NOT that painting. It is, however, a cartoon rendition of the painting in which the cartoonist has taken some liberties with the translation of the "handwriting on the wall". He's not too far off, though! 
 
Daniel 4 closed with Nebuchadnezzar recovering his mental health, being restored to his throne, and the reality of the Most High God who is sovereign over every eartly empire. Daniel 5 opens with a king named Belshazzar reigning over Babylon. 
 
What we know is that the saying, "The handwriting on the wall," has made its way into our modern culture as an idiom for "impending and unavoidable doom." Maybe you didn't know that saying comes directly from Daniel 5! 
 
In the midst of a Babylonian government drinking party and feast, Belshazzar expressed his pride and defiance toward the God who humbled Nebuchadnezzar. When a hand appeared and wrote a cryptic message on the wall, the party came to screeching halt! The DJ stopped the music and everyone froze in fear and astonishment. Is this really happening? What does it mean? 
 
Daniel, whose wisdom seems to have been forgotten or ignored, is called from the dugout to help. Here are some things to consider.... 
 
If, according to history, the last King of Babylon is a guy named Nabonidus, then who is Belshazzar? Is the Bible wrong? 
 
What was the message on the wall? What did it mean? 
 
For answers to these questions and more, you will have to tune in or show up for our study of Dan 5. By the end of the Chapter, the impenetrable Babylonian Empire, that head of Gold (ch2), will have been replaced by the Medo-Persian Empire without even the smallest battle! Wow. Are you curious? I hope so!
