I Samuel 18:8-9 Jealousy Brings you Down 
 
Then Saul became very angry, for this saying displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousand, but to me they have ascribed thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?” Saul looked at David with suspicion from that day on. 
 
Saul agreed to have David go after Goliath because nobody in his ranks would dare fight the Philistine giant. David miraculously prevailed with the Lord's help. Saul should have been grateful to David and to God, but instead, he became jealous and resentful. How often do we look a others' situation, position or property and are overcome with jealousy? It is so easy to believe that we are better or deserve more than our neighbors. When we see God blessing someone else, we ought to rejoice for them and praise God for His lovingkindness. Jealousy is a weed that will choke your walk and your witness.

I Samuel 18:8-9 Jealousy Brings you Down

He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone. And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” 
 
• Man likes to complicate things for himself and for others. We are really good at changing God’s simple message and method of salvation. As a result, many false religions were born and took many astray. Yeshua kept it simple; so simple that people chose to muddy the message. Nobody is too far gone to receive the free gift of salvation and nobody is good enough to turn down the same gift. Fear, pride and confusion might keep us away, but honesty about ourselves will draw us in. Aren’t you glad that Yeshua waited to return until after you got saved?

Acts 4:11-12 - Why Complicate Things?

Psalm 53:2-3 
God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there is anyone who understands, Who seeks after God. Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one. 
 
• The enemy works very hard at convincing the world that sin doesn’t exist or is at the very least relative. He wants us to feel good about ourselves, no matter what we do or say, because he wants us to selfishly focus on ourselves. God looks at us from a different vantage point. From His perspective, absolutely nobody makes the cut, which makes the sacrificial death and resurrection of Yeshua on our behalf even more special. Sin is real. It is in us and from us, but Yeshua conquered it at the cross. The debt has been erased.

Psalm 53:2-3 - Turned Aside..and Yet!

But they have not become contrite even to this day, nor have they feared nor walked in My law or My statutes, which I have set before you and before your fathers. 
 
Jeremiah spent much time warning the children of Israel about upcoming doom. He was often ignored and mocked. As God's spokesperson, he brought messages that were not necessarily words of encouragement, yet they were from the God of Israel. What God desired and still does today, is contriteness after disobedience. Too often our disobedience is covered with additional layers of pride and more lies in an effort to get out of a difficult predicament or further cover our iniquities. God always has an exit door for us to return to Him from our sin. It is called repentance and it is through humility and a contrite heart.

Jeremiah 44:10 - The Necessity of a Contrite Heart

Psalm 81:11-12 
“But My people did not listen to My voice, And Israel did not obey Me. “So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their heart, To walk in their own devices. 
• Asaph spoke of the stubbornness of Israel, not listening to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Just like Israel of old, God directs our paths, but we still have the option to go a different way. He is kind enough to show us the safest way when we trust Him, and He is also willing to let us wander on the byways of the world, led by our pride. Our stubbornness will always lead to potholes, bumps and detours. The “shortcut” without God is never worth the longer road in His company. How are you walking today?

Psalm 81:11-12 - The Safest Road!

John 12:10-11 
But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also; because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Yeshua. 
 
• After witnessing how Yeshua brought Lazarus back to life, many believed in Him but some also refused to see Yeshua as the long-awaited Messiah of Israel. Lazarus was a living testimony of the power of Yeshua the God/man, and as such, was very dangerous to those who rejected the truth. The blindness of the Jewish people towards Messiah continues today as Satan is working overtime to turn “the apple of God’s eye” against Yeshua. Satan is obsessed with hurting God by hurting those He loves; the Jewish people. Those who love God love His people Israel, and that upsets Satan…But God wins at the end, so welcome to the Dream Team.

John 12:10-11 - Satan's Agenda!

John 10:33 
The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.” 
• Some of His Jewish audience wanted to stone Yeshua after He spoke because they thought that He was a man pretending to be God, which is blasphemy in Judaism. Yeshua was both God (100%) and man (100%), but He was not a man claiming to be God. Rather, God in His infinite mercy for mankind sent Yeshua in a human body. He had to be a man to die for our sins AND He had to be God to rise on the third day. A man didn’t elevate himself to play God, but God lowered Himself to reach out to men… Big difference!

John 10:33 - The Perfect Solution

John 9:21-22 
But how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.” His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to be Messiah, he was to be put out of the synagogue. 
• When the blind man from birth was healed, Jewish leaders got upset because Yeshua had made clay with mud and spit, and broken the Sabbath. They were so obsessed with His breaking of the Mosaic Law that they ignored the miracle He performed and wanted to kick the man out of their community. They were looking at the incident from the wrong perspective, having decided that since Yeshua couldn’t be the Messiah, He was a false prophet. Stubbornness can often force people to ignore the truth, even when someone's testimony validates that truth. A changed life is a powerful testimony. When was the last time you shared your story?

Depart from me, all you who do iniquity, For the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping. The LORD has heard my supplication, The LORD receives my prayer. 
 
• King David pleaded with the Lord for protection from his foes and the Lord took care of him. If we take prayer seriously, and we should, God is always listening to our supplications. That is of course when we are in proper fellowship with Him. He always hears us, but He will only listen and act on our behalf when we are in the proper position in His will. There is a huge difference between hearing and listening. The Lord hears all things, but He will only listen to the righteous. Yeshua made us righteous, and yet, in the flesh, we can leave the path for a time. We must return to Him today and talk to Him.

Psalm 6:8-9

John 8:7-9 
But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. 
 
• In the powerful story of the adulterous woman, we can speculate all we want on what Yeshua wrote on the ground that instantly made the crowd walk away one by one, but nobody knows. When the Bible is silent, so should we. The lesson though is not to be missed. The sinful woman was exposed and somehow, so was the crowd. Their accusations went from specific about one person to general about them all, and they lost their right to speak. This is all about sin, introspection, repentance and forgiveness. It’s no about what Yeshua wrote but why He wrote it!

John 8:7-9 - If the Bible is Silent...

John 6:64 
But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Yeshua knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. 
 
• As He went on with His ministry, Yeshua, being God in the flesh (100% man and 100% God) knew exactly who would follow Him, who wouldn’t and even who would betray Him to the point of death. That didn’t stop Him from including Judas Iscariot in His serving/foot washing in the Upper Room. We do not know who will accept the message of the Gospel as we share it today, but sometimes, it is someone watching us living the believer’s life and sharing Yeshua with others that will bring them to Messiah. People are always watching us, let’s shine the light of Messiah!

John 6:64 - Be Who You Are in Messiah

Psalm 17:4-5 
As for the deeds of men, by the word of Your lips I have kept from the paths of the violent. My steps have held fast to Your paths. My feet have not slipped. 
 
• King David was an interesting character. It would be easy for us to remember him as an adulterer and a murderer, but God remembered him as “a man after His own heart.” It was all about repentance. David confessed to the Lord that he wasn’t following the paths of men but God’s path and he wouldn’t deviate from it. On this side of eternity, as we are still in our fallen bodies, we struggle between listening to the Spirit and the flesh and missteps occur. God sees us as redeemed by Yeshua’s blood, but that is never an excuse for not genuinely repent when we trip over our pride.

Psalm 17:4-5 - the Flesh Battles the Spirit

John 6:32-33 
Yeshua then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” 
 
• As the people were getting used to Yeshua being a prophet and possibly the long-awaited Messiah of Israel, they asked Him for a sign. Yeshua corrected them by reminding them that it wasn’t Moses who provided the manna in the desert, but God the Father. He also continued by telling them that now they could receive the bread of life through Him. The world has many ways to make us believe that we will be provided for, but there are always strings attached or disappointments when people fail us. God always provides for our needs, and He never disappoints.

John 6:32-33

1 Samuel 26:9-10 
But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against the LORD’S anointed and be without guilt?” David also said, “As the LORD lives, surely the LORD will strike him, or his day will come that he dies, or he will go down into battle and perish. 
 
• David had two opportunities to kill Saul and replace him, and yet he didn’t. He respected the man that God had allowed to become king of Israel, even though Saul was less than competent and not really walking with God. Eventually, Saul would become irrelevant and David would come to the throne. God will allow events to take place and people to come to prominence, and we shouldn’t get in His way. It’s all good because God has 20/20 vision on yesterday, today and tomorrow, so let’s stop having the blind leading the blind, and trust the only trailblazer who knows where He is going.

1Sam 26:9-10 - Sometimes God "Allows" things!

Psalm 141:3-4 
Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, To practice deeds of wickedness With men who do iniquity; And do not let me eat of their delicacies. 
 
• The psalmist reminds us about how fragile we are. He asks God to help him with thoughts, words and deeds, and keep him from evil. Our shortcomings usually begin with the wrong thoughts, but if we let them linger for too long, those thoughts can morph into words, and words can do a lot of damage. From words, the leap into actions isn’t too far-fetched. The slope from thoughts to words to actions is very slippery, and that is why, just like the psalmist, we must ask the Lord to set a guard around us. Thoughts, words and deeds are progressively more difficult to undo, so please God, help us not fall into that mode.

Psalm 141:3-4

Psalm 141:3-4 - The slippery slope!

Psalm 7:12-13 
If a man does not repent, He will sharpen His sword; He has bent His bow and made it ready. He has also prepared for Himself deadly weapons; He makes His arrows fiery shafts. 
 
• David reminds us about the importance of repentance, something that he experienced in a very real way after his relationship with Bathsheba and his murder of her husband Uriah. God always accepts us when we repent. We regularly fall short of His glory, and He is always waiting for our return to Him in humble repentance. When pride keeps someone from repentance, they are building a fence around themselves that God could break through, but repentance is a decision we make and the move is ours, not His. If we let pride win, we will not repent and that fence will slowly become more difficult to overcome. God will wait until we come back, but why be miserable and make Him wait?

Psalm 7:12-13 - Repentance can be hindered by Pride!

Psalm 11:4-5 
The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD’S throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked, And the one who loves violence His soul hates. 
 
• God is described with eyes (anthropomorphism) seeing all things everywhere and all the time, which is a bold example of His omniscience. From that, we see that He tests people; the righteous and the wicked. He has no room or patience for the wicked who commit violence. His desire is to test, refine and grow the righteous. Keep in mind that testing is different from tempting. The Lord tests to grow, while Satan tempts us to make us fail and fall. Even though testing can be difficult, we want to be tested by God, knowing that He is making us stronger for the next challenge, not to mention that there is probably a blessing coming our way as well.

John 4:28-30 
So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men, “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Messiah, is it?” They went out of the city, and were coming to Him. 
 
• After meeting Yeshua, the Samaritan woman was quickly convinced that He was the long-awaited Messiah. Her task of drawing water became unimportant and she rushed to the nearest village to tell the crowds about the Messiah. The crowds returned immediately to the well to meet Yeshua. A Samaritan (hated by the Jews) met the Jewish Messiah, her life was changed and she rushed to tell those around her. Most people are on fire for the Lord when He first comes into their lives. Then the fire subsides and in many cases, it is put down by life’s events and our daily routines. How’s your fire?

John 4:28-30 - How's your fire for the Lord?

1 Samuel 12:22-23 
For the LORD will not abandon His people on account of His great name, because the LORD has been pleased to make you a people for Himself. Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and right way. 
 
• When the people realized their mistake in selfishly asking for a king, they asked Samuel to pray for God’s mercy. They were told that God would never abandon the Jewish people, and that is simply because of His character and never because of their performance. Samuel also reassured them that he would not disobey God and would continue to pray for them. Discipline from God is always one sin away from us, but fellowship with Him is also only one repentant heart away. Whoever in our lives isn’t walking with God still needs our prayers.

John 1:11-12 
He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 
 
• Yeshua came to rescue His own according to the flesh (the lost sheep of the house of Israel), but eventually, Gentiles were added to the mix. Many Jewish people didn’t accept Yeshua as the long-awaited Messiah and only saw a blasphemous rabbi playing God. To those who believed Him-Jews and Gentiles-He gave an eternal citizenship in the Kingdom of God. His invitation was extended to all people on earth who accept the free gift of His sacrificial death and resurrection on their behalf. How painful must it be for the giver to have their gift rejected? Yet God didn’t hesitate, and that’s how much He loves us!
