In Leviticus we are introduced to one of the most important themes of the Bible: the Lord is a holy God who calls His people to be holy. The Hebrews writer tells us that without holiness, no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14). John Wesley considered that challenging statement as perhaps the most unpopular verse to preach on in the entire New Testament. In this lesson we consider God’s holiness, the practical meaning of the term ‘holy’, popular attempts to evade this teaching, and special challenges facing those who seek to live holy lives.

Many people, even Christians, are profoundly uneasy with the concept of God punishing people in the Old Testament. In this lesson we consider how the Lord treated sin in the past, and how He does today. Are all sins the same in His eyes, or are some worse? What does it mean in 1 John 5 about sins that lead (or don’t lead) to death? What is the responsibility of the church regarding dealing with the sin of its members? May we all benefit from a better understanding of the consequences of sin!

Moses and Israel's chosen men ascend Mount Sinai, where Moses will receive the stone tablets. The Lord calls Moses and Joshua to proceed further up, where they enter the midst of a great cloud. Moses remains on the mountain forty days, fasting throughout. We begin by considering the mysterious nature of God (the Father), whom no man has ever seen. We then turn to Moses' extraordinary commitment to fasting, an indication of his utter reliance on God. We conclude by taking a fresh look at what Jesus taught regarding the role fasting should have in the lives of Christians. Warning: this lesson might disrupt your eating habits!

These laws reveal God’s kindness, His concern for justice, and His desire to protect the weak and vulnerable. Jesus will later take those standards even higher. This lesson closes with a look at some very practical implications for us facing an array of current social justice challenges, including: immigration, Black Lives Matter, recent urban protests and rioting, and the rise of cultural Marxism.

John tells us plainly that many failed to follow Jesus not for lack of faith, but because "they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God." Loving men’s praise (over God’s) is a problem for many of us today as well. In this lesson we look at inspiring Biblical heroes whose commitment to pleasing God brought severe persecution. We also consider tragic counter-examples of those who disobeyed God because they wanted to please people. The lesson concludes with challenges in specific areas, for each of us to lead a courageous life devoted to pleasing God rather than people.

In addition to calling the Jews liars, Jesus says "if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death," that "Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad" and "before Abraham was, I am." What do these statements mean? And why did they prompt the Jews to try to stone Jesus? The answers to these questions reveal much about Jesus' identity as God's Son, His divinity, His power over death, and His purpose for coming to earth — all of which should shape our understanding of Him, strengthen our faith and sharpen our priorities.
