Once they left Joseph gave instructions to go and pursue them because of what was in their sacks. They were accused of stealing Joseph's cup which was put in their younger brothers sack on purpose. It was said that whomever had it in their sack would have to stay and become his slave. Judah pleaded with Joseph to allow their younger brother to come back home with them. He gave his Father his word that the boy would return back home safely.
