Leviticus 25 closes with the Lord reminding the people of an idea central to everything He’s discussed in this book. God declares in verse 55, “The children of Israel are servants to Me; they are My servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.” 
 
Seven times in Leviticus God takes a moment to remind the “children of Israel” that He was the One who liberated them from Egypt and freed them from their bondage. For 400 years they’d been held captive and forced into the servitude of Pharaoh. Not only was their prospects of liberation slim, but the Egyptians had grown brutal in their mistreatment. 
 
Most incredibly, when all hope was lost and their future bleakest, God steps through the divide, raises up Moses, and miraculously delivers the Hebrew people. What’s important about this divine intervention and why God feels the need to remind them of this reality on seven occasions throughout Leviticus was that they’d been freed for a purpose. 
 
You see God liberated the Israelites from serving Pharaoh in Egypt so that they might serve Him in Canaan. In fact, as God is wrapping up the subject matter of chapter 25 dealing with slavery, on two separate occasions He refers to them as being “My servants!” 
 
If we look at this story as an illustration of larger realities we’ll see that God has also freed us from this world (Egypt) and the bondage of sin (something we couldn’t attain on our own) for the exact same reason. In 1 Thessalonians 1:9 Paul will actually describe the Christian’s conversion as a “turning from idols to serve the living and true God.” 
 
I noted last Sunday the great myth of our day is that somehow we live in the land of the free. My friend, this is at best a mirage for you’re only really free to choose who or what you’ll end up serving! In one of his lesser known albums titled, “Slow Train Coming” Bob Dylan sang, “You might be a rock ’n’ roll addict prancing on the stage. You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage. You may be a business man or some high-degree thief. They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief… But you’re going to have to serve somebody, yes indeed. You’re going to have to serve somebody.”

In Leviticus 25 God puts His finishing touches on the way the economy was to function in Israel by establishing the Sabbath Year and Year of Jubilee. Upon entering the Promised Land the people were first instructed to work the land for a period of six years allowing it to lay fallow on the seventh. In fact, God was so serious about this Sabbath Year He promises to yield for them a threefold increase on year six to cover the seventh, eighth, and ninth. 
 
As we noted last Sunday there were four fundamental reasons for the Sabbath Year: God wanted the land to a have a chance to reset. He wanted the livestock to have an opportunity to recharge. He wanted the workers to enjoy a year in which they could relax. And finally, God wanted the owner to always remember he was only a steward of the land. 
 
Aside from this Sabbath Year occurring once in every seven, God also structured things so that a one-part economic two-parts social justice tsunami would ensue once in a generation. On the 50th year following a seven set of Sabbath Years, “on the tenth day of the seventh month” or the Day of Atonement, from the Tabernacle “the trumpet” or the shofar was “to sound” officially ushering in a Year of Jubilee “throughout all the land.” 
 
During Jubilee all debts were forgiven, loans canceled out, lands returned to their original owner, and those in servitude for financial reasons liberated. As we discussed last Sunday, Jubilee gave everyone one big due-over at some point during their lifetime. As a result… 
 
It safeguarded against the development of generational wealth and debt. It prohibited the formation of economic classes. It forbade the consolidation of affluence or development of land barons. In the end, Jubilee was God’s way of keeping Israel from becoming Egypt. 
 
Because of this generational resetting of the entire economy taking place every 50th year, there is no question the amount you loaned someone had to be determined by their ability or willingness to pay you back before Jubilee. If you purchased land to expand your farming operation, the term had to be in proportion to the number of years remaining before Jubilee.

As we turn our attention to Leviticus 24 the very first consideration you should have is a simple one… Why is this chapter here? I’m serious! When you read this chapter at first glance the subject matter seems to be oddly out of place. Let me explain what I mean… 
 
In chapter 23 (what we’ve studied the last two weeks) God institutes seven yearly feasts designed to be times of celebration and rejoicing for the Hebrew people. Then in chapter 25 God expounds on the Sabbath concept which centered on rest, relaxation, and refreshing. 
 
Not only were the people to cease from their work every seventh day, but they were to take off the seventh year in addition to the 50th — this would become known as the Year of Jubilee. My point is that thematically chapters 23 and 25 align making it strange that God would break up the flow by now inserting the subjects covered in Leviticus 24. 
 
If you’re a notetaker every scholar breaks this chapter down into three categories: The first four verses deal with the holy oil of the lampstand located in the Tabernacle, verses 5-9 address the holy bread and it’s positioning on the Table of Showbread, the remainder of the chapter then centers on a narrative dealing with the protection of God’s holy name. For our purposes you can write down three words: Power, Provision, and Purity. 
 
So back to the original question… Why would God wedge these subjects in between two chapters dealing with festival celebrations and days of rest? I believe the answer is found in Deuteronomy 16:16-17. We read, “Three times a year all your males shall appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread (which included Passover as well as the Feast of Firstfruits), at the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), and at the Feast of Tabernacles (the last of the Fall festivals); and they shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed. Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you.”

Leviticus 20:1-5, “Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Again, you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘Whoever of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who gives any of his descendants to Molech, he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones. I will set My face against that man, and will cut him off from his people, because he has given some of his descendants to Molech, to defile My sanctuary and profane My holy name. 
 
And if the people of the land should in any way hide their eyes from the man, when he gives some of his descendants to Molech, and they do not kill him, then I will set My face against that man and against his family; and I will cut him off from his people, and all who prostitute themselves with him to commit harlotry with Molech.” 
 
Historically, we know Molech was one of the gods of the ancient Canaanites dwelling in the Promised Land. In fact, archeological digs indicated Molech was a bronzen statue depicting the body of a man with the head of a bull who’s belly was hollowed out. 
 
According to non-Biblical references, the priests of Molech would stoke a fire in the belly so hot the outstretched arms of this deity would turn molten red. Then in order to bring about the financial blessing of this god, the Canaanites would actually sacrifice their firstborn babies by placing them into Molech’s searing arms in an act of worship. The belief was that the spirit of the baby would return in the second child with more strength and vigor. Once dead the burnt body of the child would be incinerated in the belly of Molech. 
 
This act of child sacrifice was so barbaric and demonically motivated God specifically singles out Molech among the many Canaanite deities prohibiting His people from having anything to do with this pagan practice. God was so serious not only was the person who disobeyed Him to be stoned to death, but a failure to report such a person would result in that individual, along with their entire family, being “cut off from the people” of God.

Leviticus is not only relevant as it theologically establishes the precedent for grace, but the book is incredibly practical in the way it explains all the many ways God’s grace changes everything! The truth is the presence of God in the midst of our lives should yield a natural effect on the way we live and interact with the world around us! 
 
This morning we’re going to work our way through Leviticus 19 verse-by-verse. What will be different is that I’m going to attempt to illustrate something about this text sitting just below the surface absolutely radicle. We’ll see if you can pick up on it before we get to the end… 
 
Leviticus 19:1-3, “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and keep My Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.’” 
 
Following a lengthy set of dietary restrictions, Leviticus 11:44 records God’s first use of this refrain, “You shall be holy; for I am holy.” Now as chapter 19 begins we again find God exhorting His people to “be holy.” Please don’t overlook the significance of this… 
 
One of the core traps people fall into when approaching a chapter like this is to see these directives as a list of commands we need to “do” as opposed to being a description of what God intended His people to “be.” God isn’t commanding His people do something. Instead, He’s describing what their lives should look like in light of their relationship established on His grace. 
 
The first characteristic a child of God living in light of His grace is that you’ll “revere your mother and father.” The idea behind this word “revere” spoke of an attitude a person who’d experienced God’s grace was to have towards their mom and dad. Paul would write in Ephesians 6:2-3, “‘Honor your father and mother,’ which is the first commandment with promise: ‘that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.’” 
 
Up front I understand for many of you the relationship you have with your parents is complicated. For others it’s down right toxic. While this verse doesn’t mean you have to obey your parents, because they gave you life a measure of reverence is appropriate.

As we enter Leviticus 18 we transition from the first half of the book that discusses how man should approach a holy God to the second half which unpacks how man should then live in light of God’s presence. Thematically, Leviticus not only establishes the precedent for grace (the foundational basis of our relationship with the divine), but the book continues in its second part explaining all the ways God’s grace changes everything! 
 
From human sexuality, interactions with parents, honoring the elderly, loving your neighbor, how we handle property, contracts, lending money, to the importance of taking one day a week to rest as well as prioritizing a vacation away form the normal routine — this second half of the book (chapters 18-27) practically addresses an array of topics concerning how we’re to live and interact with the world around us as the people of God. 
 
In order to make sense of Leviticus always remember God called the Hebrew people out of the land of Egypt not only to make them into His own special people, but He ordered their lives in such a way to demonstrate to a sinful world there was a better way to live. 
 
Leviticus 18:1-3, “Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘I am the Lord your God. According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances. (It’s as though God is saying, “As My people I don’t want you to live like the Egyptians (the culture you’re leaving that has influenced you) nor do I want you to live like the Canaanites (this new culture you’re about to enter that will seek to influence you). I want to reprogram you from what you knew so that you’ll contrast what you’ll soon encounter!”) 
 
Instead… Leviticus 18:4-5, “You shall observe (do) My judgments (God’s moral determinations about what was right and wrong which He’s about to go on the record concerning) and keep (uphold) My ordinances (these best practices He’s going to establish), to walk in them (make them a foundational part of your entire life): I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.”

Because chapter 17 closes the first half of the Book of Leviticus — a section of Scripture in which God explains the way He wanted to be approached by His people, I find it to be an appropriate time for us to take just a few moments in order to quickly recap what we’ve been examining over the last sixteen weeks. Yes, this is our 17th study in Leviticus. 
 
Leviticus begins with seven chapters detailing five specific offerings the people were to make at the “tabernacle of meeting” before the Lord. In chapter 1 we have recorded the Olah or the Burnt Offering which illustrated the Sacrifice God would have to graciously make in order to atone for our sins. God would offer something costly. Jesus would endure something ghastly. And in the end this work had to be accepted by the worshipper in faith! 
 
Following this, Leviticus 2 documents the Minchah or the Grain Offering which articulated the appropriate way in which a person was to respond to God for the demonstration of His grace. God’s Sacrifice to make atonement on our behalf (the Burnt Offering) should yield a natural response in our lives back to Him. Note: This was specifically a free-will offering! 
 
Stemming from the Olah Offering of grace and the Minchah Offering of response to God’s grace, chapter 3 lays out the Shelem or the Peace Offering. The idea behind this offering was not that the offering achieved a peace with God. Rather, it was an offering made to the Lord manifesting from a peace that had already been attained. In a profound way God is discussing how His grace should now be enjoyed by His people — His peace! 
 
Chapters 5-7 transitions to the last two of these five offerings which were mandated… The Trespass and Sin Offerings. While the Sin Offering was focused on creating a path for a person to repent of their sins of nature (unintentional) and receive God’s forgiveness, the Trespass Offering was instituted to remove the weight and guilt of a person’s intentional sin. This is why a sinner was required to make restitution in addition to a sacrifice. 
 
After articulating to Moses the protocols for the sacrificial system that was to occur specifically at this new “tabernacle of meeting,” Leviticus 8 quickly moves away from these seven chapters of legalese to an active narrative that lasts a grand total of eight days, carries us up through the end of Leviticus 10, and documents some crazy things.

Regarding our travels through the Book of Leviticus we are presently at the tale end of a section known as the Holiness Code whereby God is articulating to His people a new way they were to live that was both sanctified to Him as well as consecrated for His purposes. To accomplish this He takes five chapters (Leviticus 11-15) to classify and designate certain things and behaviors as being either “unclean” (prohibited) and/or “clean” (permissible). 
 
Over the last few weeks, on a wide array of various topics, we’ve seen God tell His people, “In order for Me to create you into a people so fundamentally different from the world that you’d be a light unto the world of a better way to live, I want you to know it’s ok for you to do this, but not ok for you to do that. You can enjoy these things, but not those. I want you to handle these type of situations that way and not the way everyone else handles them.” 
 
In chapter 11 we worked our way through what is commonly referred to as the Dietary Guidelines. As the Hebrews approached the Land of Promise — through these prohibitions to their diet — God wanted them to always remember they were not scavengers nor were they to be predators. They were to place their complete trust in Him for their provisions. 
 
In chapter 12 we see an incredible demonstration of God’s grace towards a woman who’d just given birth to a child. While the curse of sin had resulted in a real pain in childbirth, God tenderly establishes a framework whereby the woman had time to rest, heal, and nurse. 
 
In chapters 13-14 God laid out a very specific set of guidelines for how the people were to handle leprosy or in the Hebrew language tsara`ath (sigh·ra·ath). While the ancient cultures viewed all sickness as being the judgment of the gods, in this new ordering of things the God of Israel makes an important distinction between His judgment and normal illnesses. 
 
Not only does He establish a very detailed set of procedures for how the priests were to diagnose a leprous infection in an individual, an outbreak in a person’s clothing, or leprosy discovered in a physical dwelling, but God also lays out protocols for what was to be done when a person judged by God on account of sin also experienced His cleansing touch.

Continuing our examination of what is known as the Holiness Code we now turn our attention to two of the longest chapters in the entire Bible: Leviticus 13-14. Within these two chapters — and keep in mind there were no chapter breaks in the original text — God is going to lay out a very specific set of guidelines for how the people were to handle leprosy. 
 
Our approach to these lengthy chapters will require we divided things into two different studies. This morning we’re going to look at the protocols for diagnosing a leprous infection in an individual (Leviticus 13:1-46), an outbreak of leprosy in a person’s clothing (Leviticus 13:47-59), and then we’re going to skip ahead to Leviticus 14:33-57 which explains what should be done if leprosy is discovered in a physical dwelling. 
 
This approach will allow our second study to then focus exclusively on the amazing ritual laid out in Leviticus 14:1-32 for a person who finds themselves cleansed of their leprosy. 
 
Before we dive into the text there is one thing we do need to address… What is leprosy? I know that sounds basic, but in actuality defining leprosy is much hard than you’d think. For starters, you will find this term leprosy with its variations of leper or leprous occurring 68 times in the Bible: 55 in the Hebrew Old Testament and 13 in the Greek New Testament. 
 
In the Hebrew the word we have translated as leprous or leper is tsara`ath (sigh·ra·ath). The word simply means to strike and can be used to describe the one stricken. Because this word is vague, the etymology of the Hebrew and the development of our present translation ends up being vitally important when attempting to define leprosy. 
 
When the Hebrew Old Testament was transcribed into the classical Greek around 200 BC (this is known as the Septuagint) this word tsara`ath (sigh·ra·ath) ended up being translated as lepra — which stemmed from the Greek noun lepis meaning scaly like a fish. It’s from this Greek word that we eventually ended up with the Latin and English word leprosy. 
 
For reasons that will make more sense later in our study, please keep in mind the link between the disease we’re encounter in Leviticus 13-14 and what individuals were infected with during the time of Christ was clearly established for us by Jesus at the end of Mark 1 when He instructs a cleansed leper to present himself to the priest for inspection.

As you’re working your way through the Holiness Code presented in Leviticus 11-15 where God sets out to “distinguish” for the Hebrew people what was “clean and unclean” on a wide array of topics, you will discover — in the midst of directives pertaining a woman who’d just given birth to a baby boy — the following… Leviticus 12:3, “And on the eighth day (following his birth) the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.” 
 
While in Exodus 12 the LORD requires Gentiles desiring to partake in the Passover to first be circumcised (which was brutal), what makes this one verse presented in Leviticus 12 so fascinating is that it’s the only mention of circumcision in the entire Law! 
 
Aside from this rather shocking reality, you should also note that what we find articulated in this one verse is really nothing more than a restating of a command God had given to the Hebrew patriarch Abraham some 500 years earlier. Leviticus 12:3 presents nothing new. 
 
What makes all of this so strange is that you’d assume — because this act of circumcision becomes such a pivotal and largely controversial topic in the New Testament when the Church started becoming less Jewish and more dominated by Gentile Christians — that more would have been written about it in the Law… At least as much as the Dietary Guidelines which was an equally contentious topic. And yet, Leviticus 12:3 is all we have! 
 
As I’ve studied this particular topic I’m convinced the reason circumcision only gets such a small mention in the Law boils down to two simple realities: First, there was likely no need to expound upon it because every Jew already understood its significance. 
 
Keep in mind when God was giving the people the Law from Sinai and later the tabernacle of meeting not only was every Hebrew male already circumcised, but an interesting event recorded in Exodus 4:24-26 had already demonstrated how serious this was to God. 
 
In this story we read… “It came to pass” that as Moses and his family were making their way “to Egypt” following God’s commission of him at the Burning Bush, when they drew near “the encampment” of Israel “the LORD met Moses and sought to kill him!”

Leviticus 10 brings to a close a three chapter, eight day story-arch that presented for us some incredible highs promptly followed by a devastating low. In chapter 8 Moses calls out “Aaron and his sons” from the congregation of Israel, clothes them in the priestly garments, preforms the necessary rituals outlined for their ordination, before commanding they remain in the tabernacle for “seven days” to complete their consecration to the Lord. 
 
Leviticus 9 then opens on the “eighth day” with these men coming forth with the tabernacle officially being opened for business. “Aaron and his sons” make the appropriate offerings for themselves. After which they offer the Burnt, Grain, Peace, and Sin Offerings on behalf of the people. With bated breathe Israel looked on as “the glory of the LORD appeared and fire came out consuming the offering.” In response “all the people shouted” and worshipped. 
 
As all of this is happening chapter 10 opens with an immediate shift from this dramatic scene back onto the activities of the priests occurring inside of the tabernacle itself. We read, “Then Nadab and Abihu, the two oldest sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.” 
 
On their first day on the job, in one sensational instance, 2/5ths of the entire Priesthood is incinerated as two of Aaron’s four sons are “devoured” by fire coming out from the Lord! Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Moses jumps into the fray, commands Aaron and his two remaining sons not to mourn in any way, instructing them to basically keep going on! His point was these men were the “anointed priests” and therefore had a job to finish. 
 
Understandably, in the fog and confusion of everything that’s happened Aaron’s younger sons “Eleazar and Ithamar” mess up some of the protocols for the Sin Offering causing Moses to come unhinged. He issues a stern rebuke of them and in response the chapter closes with Aaron interceding by telling Moses he needed to back off — which he does. 
 
As you’re reading through Leviticus the transition from these tense events into a series of dietary guidelines laid out in chapter 11 seems odd to say the least. What make this even stranger is that the narrative of chapter 10 is later picked up in Leviticus 16:1, “Now the LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered profane fire before the LORD, and died; and the LORD said to Moses: ‘Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.”

Have you ever seen the Denzel Washington movie “Man on Fire?” If you haven’t Denzel (who is ex-CIA and a former U.S. Marine Corps Officer who specialized in reconnaissance - he was basically an assassin for the U.S. government) is hired to be the private bodyguard of a nine-year-old little girl named Pita (played by Dakota Fanning). 
 
While the gig initially seemed straightforward (and a bit beneath the skill set of our hero) things take a turn when Pita is kidnapped and Denzel is seriously injured trying to save her. 
 
Now I’m fast-forwarding through a lot of good stuff and essential plot development, but to make a long story short… The dead drop of the ransom money goes bad so the kidnappers threaten to kill Pita which prompts Denzel to take matters into his own hands. 
 
For the next hour and a half this “Man on Fire” leaves behind a trail of death and carnage as he tracks down leads into who’s ultimately responsible for this act against this little girl… Which includes brutally torturing and killing anyone with information: low level criminals, syndicate crime bosses, corrupt police officers, dirty lawyers, even Pita’s own dad (who it turns out was initially behind the kidnapping so he could collect on the insurance money). 
 
Initially, it might seem a bit peculiar why a man relatively new to Pita’s life would end up going to such lengths to save her; and yet, there is a scene right before the action commences that provides a little insight into his core motivation. (PLAY CLIP) 
 
Understand… The reason Denzel takes a bullet to defend Pita and then becomes this “Man on Fire” in an attempt to rescue her is because his relationship with that little girl had effectively saved his life! You see when Denzel’s character first took the job he was an alcoholic suffering from extreme depression and severe guilt as a result of his former life. 
 
While he had at first resisted Pita’s continual attempts to strike up a friendship, by the time of her kidnapping her unusual kindness and grace had unquestionably won him over. Understand, her love that had freed him from the very things that were destroying him. Their relationship filled his life with both meaning and purpose. Denzel is so grateful for the impact of Pita’s kindness that he’s even willing to lay down his life if it meant saving hers.

This morning I want you to know our time in Leviticus will be intentionally brief. In fact, the few verses we’re going to re-examine at the close of chapter 9 will simply act as a kind of portal through which we’ll travel back in time to gain a greater understanding of what God was really seeking to accomplish in the things we’ve been looking at in Leviticus. 
 
As I mentioned in our introduction so many of the ideas you encounter in Leviticus is God’s way of kicking the ball back to re-establish the appropriate way forward. In soccer the act of kicking the ball backwards is not only acceptable, but strategic. The ball is kicked back to a place where you can then progress the ball upfield in a more successful fashion. 
 
A great illustration of this is presented for us in Leviticus 9. After finishing the creation of the “tabernacle of meeting” at the end of Exodus, the establishing of the sacrificial system in Leviticus 1-7, and the ordaining of “Aaron and his sons” to be priests, chapter 8 closes with these men spending “seven days” in the tabernacle in order to complete their consecration. 
 
As we saw last Sunday, Leviticus 9 then fast-forwards to the “eighth day” with “Aaron and his sons” coming forth officially occupying their role as the priests and the tabernacle being officially opened for business. The High Priest Aaron makes the necessary sacrifices for himself before then making a myriad of offerings on behalf of the congregation of Israel. 
 
With these offerings sitting upon the Bronze Altar as the Lord had instructed and the entire multitude of the people attentively looking on to see what would happen next, we read… Leviticus 9:23-24, “And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting, and came out and blessed the congregation. Then the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people, and fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.” 
 
What a scene this would have been! Moses and Aaron come out of the tent and begin to pronounce “blessings on the congregation.” As this is happening “the glory of the Lord appears to all the people.” It’s likely “the glory” physically manifested in the cloud of smoke descending from on high, filling the Holy of Holies, before resting on the Mercy Seat atop the Ark. What was it like to then see “fire come out from before the Lord” and “consume the burnt offering on the altar?” What did it sound like? Could you feel the rush of air? The smell? 
 
Again, we mentioned last Sunday this word “shouted” was not a scream of terror. They weren’t frightened by what they’d just seen. Instead, they were overwhelmed with jubilee. This entire system of offerings had been founded on a core promise that God “would accept the sacrifice of their behalf to make atonement for sin.” The fire indicated He indeed had!

As we noted last Sunday Leviticus 8 marked a transition from seven chapters of legalese to an active narrative that will last eight days and carry us through the end of Leviticus 10. For a complete commentary on the formation of the Aaronic Order of Priests and why this matters I’d refer you to listen or watch last Sunday’s study on C316.tv. 
 
Regarding our purposes this morning, chapter 8 closes with Moses telling “Aaron and his sons” to “stay at the door of the tabernacle of meeting day and night for seven days, and keep the charge of the Lord, so that you may not die.’ So Aaron and his sons did all the things that the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses.” (Leviticus 8:35-36) 
 
Leviticus 9:1-6, “It came to pass on the eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons (they come forth out of the tabernacle) and the elders of Israel (the representatives of the people). And he said to Aaron, ‘Take for yourself a young bull as a sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord. 
 
And to the children of Israel you shall speak, saying, ‘Take a kid of the goats as a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, as a burnt offering, also a bull and a ram as peace offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord, and a grain offering mixed with oil; for today the Lord will appear to you.’ 
 
So they brought what Moses commanded before the tabernacle of meeting. And all the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord. Then Moses said, ‘This is the thing which the Lord commanded you to do, and the glory of the Lord will appear to you.’” 
 
Following these “seven days of consecration” where “Aaron and his sons” had to remain inside the tabernacle of meeting by the door, “it came to pass on the eighth day” that Moses calls them out and gives them new instructions. As the High Priest Aaron’s first task was to offer both a “sin offering” and a “burnt offering” for himself before then commanding “the children of Israel” to bring to the tabernacle their “sin, burnt, peace, and grain offerings.” Not only does this mark “Aaron and his sons” first day on the job, but these specific directives indicate the tabernacle of meeting was now officially open for business!

In way of recap, the first five and a half chapters of Leviticus lay out five different offerings God instructed the people of Israel to make at the tabernacle of meeting. Again, it’s worth repeating Leviticus was not designed to work, but to establish the way in which God would work. In this first half of the book where God is explaining how He should be approached by sinners, there is no question everything was predicated upon these sacrifices. 
 
In chapter 1 we have the protocols for the Burnt Offering — which intended to illustrate the atoning sacrifice God would have to make on behalf of the sins of the people. As we’ve noted, God would have to offer something costly. Jesus the Sacrifice would willingly endure something ghastly. And in the end atonement would come from our faith in these two things being enough to make us right with God. Leviticus 1:4, “It will be accepted on his behalf.” 
 
In chapter 2 we were presented the Grain Offering. Directly following a sacrifice God would make to atone for our sins, the Lord then explains the appropriate way in which we should respond to Him on account of His great grace. God doesn’t demand something extravagant nor does he delight in the artificial or fake (“no leaven or honey”). Instead, He tells us to bring to Him “fine flour, mixed with oil, seasoned with salt,” and topped with “frankincense.” 
 
In chapter 3 we transition from a response to His grace to the celebration of His grace. The Peace Offering was not a sacrifice made to secure peace with God, but a sacrifice made in celebration of the peace Jesus secured on our behalf! Because of the work Christ accomplished on our behalf satisfying a debt we could not pay, today we not only have oneness with Him through His Spirit, but we experience genuine community with each other. 
 
While the first three offerings were made as a manifestation of one’s freewill and the sacrificed received by the Lord a “sweat aroma,” the Sin and Trespass Offerings laid out in chapters 4, 5, and part of 6 were much different. Regardless of whether or not a sin was committed as a manifestation of one’s sin nature (the Sin Offering) or was done willfully (the Trespass Offering) a sacrifice was mandated by the Lord nonetheless. 
 
It’s worth noting, in the procedures concerning these two offerings, the connection back to the Burnt Offering is undeniable. In fact, the “Burnt Offering” is referenced 10 different times in chapters 4 and 5 alone. Understand, the entire purpose of these offerings was to remind you that sins of nature or will can only find atonement in the Sacrifice made by God!

Within the first half of Leviticus — which is God explaining to humanity the way He wants to be approached — the initial seven chapters detail five specific offerings the people were to make at the “tabernacle of meeting.” Again, while God wants us to come before Him, in Leviticus He’s clear there is both a right and a wrong way we can go about doing this! In fact, we’ll see this reality illustrated in a radicle way when we get to Leviticus 10! 
 
In chapter 1 we discussed the Olah or the Burnt Offering which illustrated the Sacrifice God would have to graciously make in order to truly atone for our sins. Following this, chapter 2 then documents the Minchah or the Grain Offering which articulated the appropriate way in which we should respond to God for the demonstration of His grace. If you weren’t with us for either of these two studies I encourage you to catch up this week at C316.tv. 
 
Stemming from the Olah Offering of grace and the Minchah Offering of response to God’s grace, chapter 3 transitions to the Shelem (sheh’·lem) or as it’s translated into English the Peace Offering. Defining this Hebrew word shelem is important for it immediately clears up a confusion that tends to arises when people discuss the purpose for the Peace Offering. 
 
While the customary Hebrew word for peace is shalom, the word shelem had a more official, legal connotation. For example… If you were at war with a neighbor and desired peace with them, the word shalom would be used. “We want to stop fighting and have peace with you!” 
 
That said… If you were at war and a peace agreement had already been reached, shelem would result. “We are at peace with you!” The idea behind this word shelem was that the offering was not to achieve peace with God. Rather, it was an offering made to the Lord manifesting from a peace that had already been attained. 
 
In his commentary on Leviticus 3 Pastor David Guzik observes, “This was not an offering to make peace with God, but an offering to enjoy peace with God. The whole reason Jesus made peace between the Father and the believer is so that the peace could be enjoyed.”

Because it’s been two weeks since we were last in Leviticus, let me begin our study this morning by reminding you this ancient book penned by Moses largely through the dictation of what the “LORD said” to him from the tabernacle can be broken down into two sections: Chapters 1-17 discusses the way a sinner had to approach a holy God with chapters 18-27 unpacking how that person should then live in light of their new relationship with Him. 
 
You might say in the first half of Leviticus God establishes the precedent for grace before explaining all the ways in which His grace really does change everything! 
 
With this in mind, not only does it make logical sense this first section of Leviticus begins with seven chapters detailing for us a system of sacrifices to be made at the tabernacle of meeting, but it’s worth noting everything in this book initiates after the burnt offering. 
 
In case you weren’t with us in our exposition of Leviticus 1, the key verse to understanding the purpose for this particular burnt offering is found in verse 4. We read the offerer “shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.” Before anything else could happen between the sinner and God, “atonement” or literally a covering for sin was required! 
 
In a much larger sense the burnt offering presents for us a perfect illustration of a concept central to our comprehension of this book. You see Leviticus (with all of its rites, rituals, laws, instructions, mandates, demands, edicts, and traditions) never intended to work, but only to establish the framework by which God would work! 
 
In fact, in Galatians 3 Paul will describe the “works of the law” as being a “curse” because no one could actually obey them! A sad commentary of the Old Testament history of the Hebrew people is that you’d be hard-pressed to find more than just a few examples of the people actually attempting to take the instructions of Leviticus and implement them accordingly.

This morning as we ease our way back into the flow of John 19 I want to back up just a bit and address three things we weren’t able to discuss last Sunday: the motivations of the mob, the significance of the location of Golgotha, and the sad fate of this man Pontius Pilate. 
 
First, consider the motivations of the mob who had come to the Praetorium adamant Jesus be crucified and this known criminal Barabbas released. For starters, there are some who try to make the case the same crowd who cried out on Palm Sunday, “Hosanna the King” were now demanding Pilate “crucify Jesus!” I’m not sure that’s a fair assertion. 
 
Though true most of those who’d amassed were indeed present for Jesus’ triumphal entry, keep in mind it’s not only early in the morning and the gathering of such a crowd odd to say the least, but the Gospel records indicate a bit of astroturfing may have been at work. 
 
Notice on the two occasions John records Pilate’s interactions with this crowd we read (John 19:6), “Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Jesus, they cried out, saying, ‘Crucify Him, crucify Him!’” Then after trying to appease their blood-thirst by having Jesus scourged, John 19:14-15 records, “And Pilate said to the Jews, ‘Behold your King!’ But they cried out, ‘Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!’ Pilate said to them, ‘Shall I crucify your King?’ The chief priests answered, ‘We have no king but Caesar!’” 
 
Aside from this account provided in John’s Gospel, in both Mark 15 and Matthew 27 we read how it was “the chief priests and elders who persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.” In fact, in his summary of the entire scene, Luke tell us (Luke 23:23), “And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed.” 
 
The reason this is important centers on the fact that Jesus wasn’t crucified because of the fickle emotions of an out-of-control mob, but rather the intentional actions of the religious establishment. It’s likely powerful men like Annas and Caiaphas recruited a mob to make it seem like this was an organic outcry against Jesus when it really wasn’t. 
 
Aside from the underhanded nature of such a ploy, what makes the actions of these men all the more egregious is the fact they had been charged by God with the task of looking out for the Messiah! The grand twist to the entire story is the fact they knowingly rejected a man who was likely their Messiah and then had Him crucified!

John 8:46-51, “Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.’ Then the Jews answered and said to Him, ‘Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?’ Jesus answered, ‘I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.’” 
 
John 8:52-53, “Then the Jews said to Him, ‘Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; (this was actually false) and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?’” (Theologically these men don’t understand what Jesus is saying about death.) 
 
John 8:54-58, “Jesus answered, ‘If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.’ Then the Jews said, ‘You are not yet 50 years old, and have You seen Abraham?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.’” 
 
Though last Sunday we addressed the significance of Jesus’ incredible statement, “Before Abraham was, I AM” this morning I want to unpack what Jesus meant when He said, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad!” 
 
Naturally, two questions emerge… First, what did Jesus mean when He said, “My day?” Clearly, using the personal pronoun “My” Jesus is referencing a specific “day” of incredible significance to Him. This was a “day” not particular to Abraham, but one in which Abraham “saw” and came to understand it’s importance — it’s why he “rejoiced and was glad.” 
 
Secondly, when did “Abraham see it and rejoice?” Though there are varying opinions about this particular topic, in trying to connect this reference back to a story recorded in Genesis (keep in mind John pulls many of his theme’s directly form the Genesis of Grace) — It’s important you not forget the context of the statement is death and resurrection. 
 
With this in mind, I think the only occurrence and known interaction between Abraham and Jesus recorded in Genesis that plays on these important ideas is found in Genesis 22! 
 
Genesis 22:1-2, “Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ Then He said, ‘Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.’” 
 
For context, it’s important to point out it’s been approximately 25 to 30 years since God had given Abraham and Sarah the promised child they named Isaac. This means as you turn to Genesis 22 Abraham is now around 130 years old and Isaac is pushing 30. 
 
Imagine this incredible season of life Abraham and Sarah have been enjoying. Not only have they settled into the land God had given them… Not only are they enjoying peace with their neighbors… Not only has there been calm in the home since Hagar and Ishmael left, but Abraham and Sarah are savoring the son they waited all those years to have! 
 
After 90 long years Sarah is relishing the opportunity to be a mom… To be needed… To selflessly care and love her miracle baby. As Isaac grows up Abraham is thrilled for the opportunity to teach his son about the Lord. There is no doubt Isaac understands the significance of his birth (he’s the only toddler in Sunday school who’s parents are card carrying members of the AARP). Regardless, Isaac’s spiritual heritage is profoundly rich. 
 
Life is grand. For the first time they’re experiencing the full-life God had promised them so many years before — the life they’d originally left Ur to inherit. And while all of these things had taken longer than they anticipated to come to fruition (family planning hadn’t worked out like they’d hoped), Ab and Sarah wouldn’t have traded these years with Isaac for anything.
