He Stole It, But I Still Have It. 1 Timothy 6:6

The days ahead will be very trying for the church, but the word of God gives us the perspective that will not only survive, but thrive. The word of God gives us the encouragement we need to face what's coming.

We look at 1 Timothy3:11 and Romans 16:1-2 to see if the Bible teaches that there are to be deaconesses in the church.

This is the final installment of the series on the qualifications a man must meet to fill the high calling of ministry of elder. But first we look at something that I saw this week in my quiet time; and that is the ministry of Samuel after Saul became king mirrors that of an elder: prayer and the ministry of the word.

In this instant culture we want everything RIGHT NOW, we do not like to wait for anything. In this text, though, in order to be an elder we see that need to wait and see if a man has the character needed. As Christians, instead of being xenophobic, we are called to "philoxeno" which is the Greek word which we translate as "hospitality" and the literal translation is "philo - love" and "xeno - strangers". So, the literal meaning of "hospitality" is "love strangers". As Christians this what we are called to, and it is what lead to the conversion of Rosaria Butterfield. She explains Biblical hospitality in her book "The Gospel Comes With a House Key"

As I stated in my last sermon I did not want to preach this message until I fully understood it. Some people say that there is a way to understand this phrase that allows women to be elders, is that true? Others say that single men can show this quality. Is that true? Some say that this means that any man who has had more than one wife for any reason are disqualified from being elders. Is that true? Can men who are divorced or widowed be elders?
