The Corinthians had expressed to Paul, either in their letter or via their spokesmen, that they remained devoted to Paul and to the teachings, the central doctrines of the faith, which he had communicated to them. 
 
1 Corinthians 11:2 
Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. 
Paul no doubt appreciated the Corinthians' goodwill toward him. But more importantly, he wanted to see behavior in keeping with a Christian's calling.

Paul had not shackled the exercise of his rights in the area of food and drink alone (as he had intimated the knowledgeable Christians should do), but he had applied it to numerous facets of his ministry so that though he was free he voluntarily became a slave for the good of others whom he wanted to win. 
 
1 Corinthians 10:33 just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

The Corinthians did not have a copy of either Gospel to refer to, but the Lord's teaching would have been given to them as a part of the oral tradition shared by the Apostles. The laborer is worthy of his hire is a fundamental principle that the church dare not neglect. 
 
Luke 10:7-8 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. 
 
Matthew 10:10 …nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.

Today  we will continue with 1 Corinthians 9:7-14.
