The Dutch foreign ministry is investigating reports that China has set up two illegal police stations in the Netherlands, which it uses to harass dissidents. 
 
The ministry’s announcement came on Wednesday after Dutch media reported that the Chinese posts in Amsterdam and Rotterdam purported to offer diplomatic assistance but that they had not been declared to the Netherlands’ government. 
The “police stations” were being used to silence political opponents, according to a Chinese dissident living in the Netherlands cited by broadcaster RTL and investigative website Follow the Money. 
 
China’s foreign ministry said the reports were “completely false” and said the “service stations” were meant to help overseas citizens do things like renew driving licences. 
 
The Netherlands said it was taking the claims “seriously”. 
 
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now investigating the activities of the so-called police centres. When we have more clarity about this, appropriate action will be taken,” Dutch foreign ministry spokeswoman Maxime Hovenkamp told the AFP news agency. 
 
“It is true that we have not been informed about the centres through diplomatic channels.” 
 
Activists have struck more often in European museums in recent months, but it was the first time in the Netherlands. They draw attention to the destructive consequences of climate change. So far, no works of art have been damaged, but the museum world is not reassured that this will remain the case. 
 
One of the activists in the Mauritshuis had his head glued to the glass after being doused with a red substance; on a video of the action, it appears to be canned tomatoes. Another stuck his hand to the green wall next to the artwork. They were dressed in shirts from the British activist group Just Stop Oil, which has said it is not behind this stunt but believes it is justified, given the seriousness of the climate crisis. The Hague police have arrested three Belgians. 
 
One of the activists noted that the nearly four-hundred-year-old painting is behind glass and therefore not in danger. Even in previous daubing campaigns – such as last weekend, when climate activists in Potsdam, Germany, smeared a painting by Monet with mashed potatoes – the artworks themselves were not damaged, thanks to a glass plate. 
 
Algorithms used in the recruitment of staff are confirming existing prejudices, research by the Radboud University commissioned by jobs website Nationale Vacaturebank has found. The jobs agency matched 9,000 anonymous CVs with 12 million job descriptions using artificial intelligence. It found women and men were matched with jobs in traditionally female and male sectors like childcare and the building trade, and that women were linked to jobs earning significantly less money. The reason the algorithms are biased is partly because the system is based on data put in by people, Gido Schoenmacker, lead data science at the agency, told RTL Nieuws. ‘The algorithms amplify prejudices. What we see is that women are less likely to get certain jobs because it has always been men that have been selected for them.’ The jobs agency wants to use self learning systems more often to match people to jobs but sometimes they learn the wrong things, Schoenmacker said. ‘Our own research and that of Radboud University will help prevent this.’ One example of algorithms learning from people’s prejudices can be seen at Amazon, where the algorithms were found to have a preference for white men. The use of language is one element the algorithms pick up on, Schoenmacker said. Words such as ‘success oriented’ and ‘winners mentality’ are more often found on men’s CVs and in the job descriptions for higher paid jobs. If the algorithm is set up in such a way that it can no longer find clues to distinguish men from women, prejudices based on sex no longer play a role. One of the models applied in the research narrowed the pay gap from €1,680 to €180. The system can learn anything you like, Schoenmacker said, but if it is a good tool to match people and jobs remains to be seen. The jobs agency will start a trial using the system next year.

Grace O'Malley (c. 1530 – c. 1603) was the head of the Ó Máille dynasty in the west of Ireland & the daughter of Eóghan Dubhdara Ó Máille, he and his family were based in Clew Bay, County Mayo. 
 
In Irish folklore she is commonly known as Gráinne Mhaol and is a well-known historical figure in sixteenth-century Irish history. In popular culture she is often referred to as "The Pirate Queen". 
 
O'Malley is not mentioned in the Irish annals, so documentary evidence for her life comes mostly from English sources, especially the eighteen "Articles of Interrogatory". She is mentioned in the English State Papers and in other documents of the kind, as well. 
 
 Upon her father's death she took over active leadership of the lordship by land and sea, despite having a brother. 
She allegedly took a shipwrecked sailor as her lover. The affair only lasted briefly as he was killed by the MacMahons of Ballyvoy. Seeking vengeance, O'Malley attacked the MacMahon castle of Doona in Blacksod Bay and killed her lover's murderers on Cahir Island. Her attack on Doona Castle earned her the nickname 'Dark Lady of Doona'. More than twenty years after her death, an English Lord Deputy of Ireland recalled her ability as a leader of fighting men, noting the fame she still had among the Irish people. 
 
In 1576, O'Malley engaged in the surrender and regrant process with the Lord Deputy Sir Henry Sidney in respect of her lands. Because Rockfleet was over a week's march from Dublin, and as she was so often at sea, control by the Crown was very weak. 
 
In 1593, in his letter to protest O'Malley's claims against him, Sir Richard Bingham claimed that she was "nurse to all rebellions in the province for this forty years". Bingham was Lord President of Connacht, tasked with controlling local lords who had, until then, been mostly autonomous. 
 
O'Malley had every reason, and used every opportunity, to limit the power of the Kingdom of Ireland over her part of the country. An expedition from Galway led by Sheriff William Óge Martyn attacked her castle at Clare Island in March 1579. However, they were put to flight and barely escaped. 
 
O'Malley then met with the Queen at Greenwich Palace, wearing a fine gown; the two of them were surrounded by guards and the members of Elizabeth's royal court. O'Malley refused to bow before Elizabeth because she didn't recognise her as the "Queen of Ireland". It's also rumoured that she had a dagger concealed about her person, which guards found upon searching her. Elizabeth's courtiers were said to be very upset and worried, but O'Malley informed the Queen that she carried it for her own safety. Elizabeth accepted this and seemed untroubled. 
 
Some also reported that O'Malley had sneezed and was given a lace-edged handkerchief from a noblewoman. She apparently blew her nose into it and then threw the cloth into a nearby fireplace, much to the shock of the court. O'Malley informed everyone that in Ireland, a used handkerchief was considered dirty and was properly destroyed. 
 
Their discussion was carried out in Latin, as O'Malley spoke no English and Queen Elizabeth I spoke no Irish. After much talk, the women came to an agreement that included that Elizabeth would remove Bingham from his position in Ireland, and O'Malley would stop supporting the Irish lords' rebellions. 
 
Bingham was removed but several of O'Malley's other demands (including the return of the cattle and land that Bingham had stolen from her) remained unmet, and soon Elizabeth sent Bingham back into Ireland. Bingham continued to plague O'Malley and in 1594 troops were quartered on her lands. 
 
Westport House in County Mayo, Ireland, was the seat of the Browne dynasty, Marquesses of Sligo, direct descendants of Grace O'Malley.

The dolls are displayed hierarchically with the emperor and empress at the top, which are set in front of a gilded screen representing the throne. The number of dolls and their size vary from home to home, but five to seven platforms are common. 
It is customary to put the dolls away as soon as the festival is over—there is a superstition that if the dolls are left out, a family will have trouble marrying off their daughters. After the festival, some people release paper dolls into the rivers praying that this will send away sickness and bad fortune. 
Traditional Food 
As with almost all holidays, food and drink play a role on Girls' Day, with rice wine, rice cakes and pink pillows of mochi taking center stage, along with flower blossoms. 
History of the Event 
The displaying of Hina dolls began in the early 1600s as a way to ward off evil spirits. It was thought that the dolls would act as good luck charms. 
The origin of Hinamatsuri most likely dates back to an ancient Chinese practice in which the sin of the body and misfortune are transferred to a doll and then removed by abandoning the doll on a river and have it float away. 
This custom in which people float paper dolls down rivers late in the afternoon of March 3, still exists in various areas. 
On May 5, Japanese people celebrate the health and happiness for boys. (Children’s Day). 
On that day the families with boys raise carp-shaped flags to express hope that their boys will grow up healthy and strong 
In Japan the carp is thought to be a symbol of strength, courage and success because of a Chinese legend that a carp swam upstream and became a dragon 
Besides the carp streamers, it's also a typical celebration to decorate the armor, helmet, sword or warrior doll (May dolls) at house with boys

Protein sourced from 'grain legumes' costs 1/5 AS MUCH as protein from milk. 'Grain legumes' (beans, pulses and oilseeds) are protein rich and affordable foods. In addition, the amino acid balance of grain legume protein complements that of cereals when eaten together, greatly improving the protein quality of the combined food. 
 
Pulses have a LOW FAT content and contain zero cholesterol. The Glycemic Index (an indicator of the effect on blood sugar) is also low in pulses, and they are a significant source of dietary fiber.

COWPEAS are rich in potassium with a good amount of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. This pulse tones the spleen, stomach and pancreas. 
 
Pulses are good for the environment because plants need nitrogen to grow and reproduce, and many varieties of pulses can biologically fix nitrogen from the air. When pulses plants decompose, the fixed nitrogen is released and it can be used by companion and subsequent crops. Additionally, using pulses in intercropping, pulse-cereal rotations and as cover crops can help increase organic matter and microbial biomass and activity (e.g. bacteria, fungi) in the soil.

The Day of Atonement
