Thanks to the King James and Latin translations, Isaiah 14 is often thought to be a vision of Satan being cast out of Heaven. But if we stick to the biblical and historical contexts, we come to a different conclusion. To say it differently, what would your understanding be if you put yourself in the sandals of a exiled Jew?

You Should Think "King of Babylon," not "Lucifer/Satan" (Isa. 13:14 -14:27)

There's More to Jesus Than "Savior" (Isa. 11:3-4)

What would an exiled or enslaved Jew have thought about the "shoot of Jesse" that Isaiah wrote about? What kind of hope would it instill? What kind of man would he be looking for?

We who live in the west, particularly the U.S.A., are so far removed from threat of invasion or famine that we may find it difficult to identify with rejoicing "as at harvest" or "as when men divide the spoil." But we should try. Our King is still providing and still leading us to victory. It's important to celebrate these as gifts from His hand. Today, we talk about these things in light of Isaiah. 9.

Good Days Are Coming...Rejoice! (Isa. 9:1-3)

Political parties and media work together to distract Christians from profitable labor in this world. Worse, they incite fear. This is nothing new; God warned Isaiah to avoid following the crowd into popular conspiracy theories and other distractions.

Conspiracy Theories and What To Do About Them (Isa. 8:11-15)

Ahaz may have had David's throne, but he had nothing like David's courage. Why? Because he trusted in men rather than in the Lord when opposition came. Fear is a powerful tool in the hand of the enemy, whether in Isaiah's day or in our own. In today's study, we learn how to confront the government, media, and mobs when they try to instill fear in our hearts.

When God Confronted a Spineless, "Liberal" Politician (Isa. 7:3-9)

Most Christians are familiar with Isaiah 9 - "For unto us a Son is born/Child is given." But do you know the content of chapter 7-8 which provide its context? The promise of a good, faithful, all-powerful King is welcome news for a people led by wicked, faithless, impotent men. Today, we begin to set the historical stage for the coming King in Isaiah.

The Mess Isaiah Was Sent to Address (Isa. 7:1-2)

On the heels of wrathful warnings against Jewish pride, Isaiah sees beauty, glory, and redemption, all of it happening "in that day." What day? And what does it mean for Christians today? We discuss in today's study.

"And so all Israel will be saved," it's a verse that creates all kinds of debate and controversy. If we are to understand it correctly, we have to understand why the Apostle Paul quotes Isaiah 59 to make the point. In today's study, we do just that.

Romans 10:6-7 is difficult, especially if we haven't paid careful attention to the argument leading up to it. In today's study, we will look at Deuteronomy 30 ("Who will ascend into heaven...descend into the abyss") in its original context and why Paul quotes it in Romans 10.

What happened to the Jews? How could they have missed the truth of Christ so badly? The Apostle Paul explains how and why, and shows how Isaiah predicted it all.

In Hosea, God called Israel, "Not My people." Then He called them, "My people." Paul quotes those verses in a context that seems to be talking about Gentiles. But is it? And what do we make of Hosea's and Paul's statements regarding the status of Jews/Gentiles today? We work through these things in today's study.

In many English translations of Romans 8:4, it sounds like Christians are now able to obey God's Law by the power of the Spirit. For many in Reformed Theology, this means that we can keep the 10 Commandments by the "spirit of the Law" rather than the "letter of the Law." But is that what the text means in its context? You can probably tell by the way I'm asking the question that I don't think so. I'll show you why in today's study.
