15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, 
 that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? 
Even these may forget, 
 yet I will not forget you. 
16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; 
 your walls are continually before me. 
17 Your builders make haste; 
 your destroyers and those who laid you waste go out from you. 
18 Lift up your eyes around and see; 
 they all gather, they come to you. 
As I live, declares the Lord, 
 you shall put them all on as an ornament; 
 you shall bind them on as a bride does. 
 
19 “Surely your waste and your desolate places 
 and your devastated land— 
surely now you will be too narrow for your inhabitants, 
 and those who swallowed you up will be far away. 
20 The children of your bereavement 
 will yet say in your ears: 
‘The place is too narrow for me; 
 make room for me to dwell in.’ 
21 Then you will say in your heart: 
 ‘Who has borne me these? 
I was bereaved and barren, 
 exiled and put away, 
 but who has brought up these? 
Behold, I was left alone; 
 from where have these come?’” 
 
22 Thus says the Lord God: 
“Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations, 
 and raise my signal to the peoples; 
and they shall bring your sons in their arms, 
 and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders. 
23 Kings shall be your foster fathers, 
 and their queens your nursing mothers. 
With their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you, 
 and lick the dust of your feet. 
Then you will know that I am the Lord; 
 those who wait for me shall not be put to shame.” 
 
24 Can the prey be taken from the mighty, 
 or the captives of a tyrant be rescued? 
25 For thus says the Lord: 
“Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken, 
 and the prey of the tyrant be rescued, 
for I will contend with those who contend with you, 
 and I will save your children. 
26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, 
 and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. 
Then all flesh shall know 
 that I am the Lord your Savior,

44:23 Sing, O heavens, for the Lord has done it;

 or wearied you with frankincense. 
You have not bought me sweet cane with money, 
 or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices. 
But you have burdened me with your sins; 
 you have wearied me with your iniquities. 
 
“I, I am he 
 who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, 
 and I will not remember your sins. 
Put me in remembrance; let us argue together; 
 set forth your case, that you may be proved right. 
Your first father sinned, 
 and your mediators transgressed against me. 
Therefore I will profane the princes of the sanctuary, 
 and deliver Jacob to utter destruction 
 and Israel to reviling.

 and look, you blind, that you may see! 
Who is blind but my servant, 
 or deaf as my messenger whom I send? 
Who is blind as my dedicated one,[d] 
 or blind as the servant of the Lord? 
He sees many things, but does not observe them; 
 his ears are open, but he does not hear. 
The Lord was pleased, for his righteousness' sake, 
 to magnify his law and make it glorious. 
But this is a people plundered and looted; 
 they are all of them trapped in holes 
 and hidden in prisons; 
they have become plunder with none to rescue, 
 spoil with none to say, “Restore!” 
Who among you will give ear to this, 
 will attend and listen for the time to come? 
Who gave up Jacob to the looter, 
 and Israel to the plunderers? 
Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned, 
 in whose ways they would not walk, 
 and whose law they would not obey? 
So he poured on him the heat of his anger 
 and the might of battle; 
it set him on fire all around, but he did not understand; 
 it burned him up, but he did not take it to heart. 
But now thus says the Lord, 
he who created you, O Jacob, 
 he who formed you, O Israel: 
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; 
 I have called you by name, you are mine. 
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; 
 and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; 
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, 
 and the flame shall not consume you. 
For I am the Lord your God, 
 the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. 
I give Egypt as your ransom, 
 Cush and Seba in exchange for you. 
Because you are precious in my eyes, 
 and honored, and I love you, 
I give men in return for you, 
 peoples in exchange for your life. 
Fear not, for I am with you; 
 I will bring your offspring from the east, 
 and from the west I will gather you. 
I will say to the north, Give up, 
 and to the south, Do not withhold; 
bring my sons from afar 
 and my daughters from the end of the earth, 
everyone who is called by my name, 
 whom I created for my glory, 
 whom I formed and made.” (Isaiah 42:18-43:7)

For you have rejected your people, the house of Jacob, because they are full of things from the east and of fortune-tellers like the Philistines, and they strike hands with the children of foreigners. Their land is filled with silver and gold, and there is no end to their treasures; their land is filled with horses, and there is no end to their chariots. Their land is filled with idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their own fingers have made. So man is humbled, and each one is brought low— do not forgive them! Enter into the rock and hide in the dust from before the terror of the Lord, and from the splendor of his majesty. The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, 
and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day. For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low; against all the cedars of Lebanon, lofty and lifted up; and against all the oaks of Bashan; against all the lofty mountains, and against all the uplifted hills; against every high tower, and against every fortified wall; against all the ships of Tarshish, and against all the beautiful craft. And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day. And the idols shall utterly pass away. And people shall enter the caves of the rocks and the holes of the ground, from before the terror of the Lord, and from the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to terrify the earth. In that day mankind will cast away their idols of silver and their idols of gold, which they made for themselves to worship, to the moles and to the bats, to enter the caverns of the rocks and the clefts of the cliffs, from before the terror of the Lord, and from the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to terrify the earth. Stop regarding man in whose nostrils is breath, for of what account is he? (Isaiah 2:6-22)

Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men; her priests profane what is holy; they do violence to the law. The Lord within her is righteous; he does no injustice; every morning he shows forth his justice; each dawn he does not fail; but the unjust knows no shame. “I have cut off nations; their battlements are in ruins; I have laid waste their streets so that no one walks in them; their cities have been made desolate, without a man, without an inhabitant. I said, ‘Surely you will fear me; you will accept correction. Then your dwelling would not be cut off according to all that I have appointed against you.’ But all the more they were eager to make all their deeds corrupt. “Therefore wait for me,” declares the Lord, “for the day when I rise up to seize the prey. For my decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them my indignation, all my burning anger; for in the fire of my jealousy all the earth shall be consumed. Zephaniah 3:1-8: "The Judgment of Jerusalem"

For Gaza shall be deserted, and Ashkelon shall become a desolation; 
Ashdod's people shall be driven out at noon, and Ekron shall be uprooted. Woe to you inhabitants of the seacoast, you nation of the Cherethites! The word of the Lord is against you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines; and I will destroy you until no inhabitant is left. And you, O seacoast, shall be pastures, with meadows for shepherds and folds for flocks. The seacoast shall become the possession of the remnant of the house of Judah, on which they shall graze, and in the houses of Ashkelon they shall lie down at evening. For the Lord their God will be mindful of them and restore their fortunes. “I have heard the taunts of Moab and the revilings of the Ammonites, how they have taunted my people and made boasts against their territory. Therefore, as I live,” declares the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Moab shall become like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land possessed by nettles and salt pits, and a waste forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.” 10 This shall be their lot in return for their pride, because they taunted and boasted against the people of the Lord of hosts. The Lord will be awesome against them; for he will famish all the gods of the earth, and to him shall bow down, each in its place, all the lands of the nations. You also, O Cushites, shall be slain by my sword. And he will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy Assyria, and he will make Nineveh a desolation, a dry waste like the desert. Herds shall lie down in her midst, all kinds of beasts; even the owl and the hedgehog shall lodge in her capitals; a voice shall hoot in the window; devastation will be on the threshold; for her cedar work will be laid bare. This is the exultant city that lived securely, that said in her heart, “I am, and there is no one else.” What a desolation she has become, a lair for wild beasts!

Be silent before the Lord God! For the day of the Lord is near; the Lord has prepared a sacrifice and consecrated his guests. And on the day of the Lord's sacrifice— “I will punish the officials and the king's sons and all who array themselves in foreign attire. On that day I will punish everyone who leaps over the threshold, and those who fill their master's house with violence and fraud. “On that day,” declares the Lord, “a cry will be heard from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second Quarter, a loud crash from the hills. Wail, O inhabitants of the Mortar! For all the traders are no more; all who weigh out silver are cut off. At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are complacent, those who say in their hearts, ‘The Lord will not do good, nor will he do ill.’ Their goods shall be plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them.” The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter; the mighty man cries aloud there. A day of wrath is that day, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements. I will bring distress on mankind, so that they shall walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the Lord; their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them on the day of the wrath of the Lord. In the fire of his jealousy, all the earth shall be consumed; for a full and sudden end he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth. (Zephaniah 1.7-18)

And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. Mark 14:12-16: "A Deliberate Sacrifice"

For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:13-17)

Resurrection Sunday: He is Risen! John 20:28-29

In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. (Mark 8:1-8)

Mark 8:1-10: "The Compassion of Christ"

There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” (Mark 7:15-23)

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:23-27)
