Satisfied. Ecclesiastes 6:1-12

Have you found enjoyment in the gift of God? 
 
Paraphrased by Randy Alcorn in his book The Treasure Principle, under the heading “Chasing the Wind.” Alcorn quotes each of Solomon’s insights in Ecclesiastes 5:10–15, and then adds his own paraphrase: 
 
 • “Whoever loves money never has money enough” (v. 10). The more you have, the more you want. 
 • “Whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income” (v. 10). The more you have, the less you’re satisfied. 
 • “As goods increase, so do those who consume them” (v. 11). The more you have, the more people (including the government) will come after it. 
 • “And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them?” (v. 11). The more you have, the more you realize it does you no good. 
 • “The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep” (v. 12). The more you have, the more you have to worry about. 
 • “I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owner” (v. 13). The more you have, the more you can hurt yourself by holding on to it. 
 • “Or wealth lost through some misfortune” (v. 14). The more you have, the more you have to lose. 
 • “Naked a man comes from his mother’s womb, and as he comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand” (v. 15). The more you have, the more you’ll leave behind.

 • Heart. Who do you love? Have you received the love of 
 Jesus (Jn 1:12)

  I hope you will see that we have passed the test! 
  If Christ is in you, then He is in the one who led you to Christ. 
 Legitimate apostle after all! 
 o Supplication, 7 
  We pray to God that you may not do wrong 
 • Will. Live in conformity to the law of Christ. Follow Me. 
 • Perseverance is the evidence of a saved life. 
“The fundamental problem in the evangelical world today is that God rests too inconsequentially upon the church. His truth is too distant, his grace is too ordinary, his judgment is too benign, his gospel is too easy, and his Christ is too common.” (David Wells, God in the Wasteland, p30). 
  We pray that you would do right, regardless of how we look,

3. Constraint and Direction, 8-10 
 o We cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth, 8 
  E.g. the futility of lying 
  Jesus is the Truth (Jn 14:6; Col 2:3; Prov 1:7) 
  Jesus will reign (Phil 2:5-11; Rev 20; Matt 16:15-20 [21, must 
 suffer]) 
  We are glad when we are weak and you are strong, 9a 
 o Will you conform to the truth?

• How do you discern when the time for mercy has come to an end, and a time for decisive action is at hand? 
• Examine yourself. Are you in the faith? Is Jesus Christ in you? On what Scripture are you basing this? What fruit in your life bears evidence of this? 
• In what way are you deliberately conforming your life to the truth of the gospel? How does this affect the people around you?

 iii. I will dwell among them, and I will be their God… 6:16 
 iv. God making His appeal through us, 5:20 
 v. We became the righteousness of God, 5:21 
 vi. Working together with Him, 6:1 
 vii. The veil is removed. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom, 3:17 
 viii. We are being transformed into the same image, 3:18 
 ix. We rely not on ourselves but God, 1:9 
 d. Having the heart of God (all for your upbuilding, beloved)

• How can you speak in such a way that you build someone up, even when dealing with sin?
