Village Church

Knowledge isn't something that's stagnant. Knowing that a snake can bite you means you don't go around picking up snakes. You know someone loves you not just by having information about that person but because that person has showed you that they love you. It's the same with knowing God. This morning in 1 Kings 19-21, we will see that knowing God is not just about learning facts about God about God, it's also about how we respond to what we know about Him so we can live in relationship with him.

Today we're starting a new series called Future Church. In this four-week vision series we’re going to be thinking about who we are and where we’re going as a church. 
Jesus tells us that: “Everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” At Village Church, we aim to show the love of Jesus to one another in everything we do: with open doors, with seats at our dinner tables, over coffee. We’re a community who longs for everyone to feel a real sense of love and belonging, because of the love that Christ has shown us. And that’s what we’re going to be exploring today: How we’re called to be a community who loves one another, to the glory of God.

Future Church - Community (Ephesians 2:11-12) | Full Sunday Service (17 July, 2022)

Dead people don't rise from the dead. Well, they only do, if they are zombies or ghosts! And we know just how real they are. This is the place where the resurrection of Jesus is often placed. In the realm of fantasy and fairy tale. It just isn't real. Dead people don't rise from the dead! 
 
But yet, the theme of resurrection runs throughout many stories in our culture. Movies and shows with last-minute turnarounds and surprises clutter our streaming services. Death feels so wrong and unnatural. We feel robbed by time stolen from the passing of our loved ones. We thirst for life and spurn death. When someone dies we say "RIP-Rest in Peace" but if there is no life after death then where is the Resting in Peace? Our world is crying out for more. Crying out for the possibility that there might be more to life than what is in front of our eyes. Crying out for hope. 
 
And that hope is what we will be looking at this Sunday. Not only looking at it, but celebrating and enjoying it.

This week we are encouraged to look at the farmer in Mark 4. Look at the farmer, and you will see just how hard our mission is. It certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted. We need to ensure that the seed of the word of God is sown indiscriminately and liberally in every corner of the field. We do that because we know that seed that is sown in good soil will produce a harvest. With that knowledge, what are we to do? How are we to respond? How and why should we keep following Jesus?

In this week’s passage, we see stories of people rejecting Jesus, and a lot of people being saved into Jesus’ new family. To everyone who calls on Jesus’ name for help, we see Jesus healing them, giving them rest, and forgiving their sins. And Jesus’ church the same today: it’s filled with broken people who have called on his name because they need his help. But it’s a great comfort that the onus isn’t ultimately on us to do what only Jesus can do: heal broken hearts, give true rest, and forgive sins.
