Finding Out & Using My Spiritual Gifts, Romans 12:5-8

Romans 6:5-14 (ESV) 
o Paul expands on the idea of union with Christ and the implications of that reality for the Christian life. Being united to Christ in His death and resurrection impacts how and should live. 
o Paul uses a curious phrase in v5, “united with him in a death like his,” (or better translated “united with the likeness of his death”). Does this mean that baptism is an image of the death of Christ or is a form of the death of Christ present sacramentally in baptism? 
▪ While debatable, the phrase is probably best understood through what we saw in v4. We are united to Christ in His death in a redemptive-historical sense. We are united to that event not physically or in time but by its significance in redemptive history, and we are being continually conformed to the death. This makes the most sense of the verb “we have been united” where the action takes place in the past but has present and future results. 
▪ The second half of v5 uses a future tense verb to describe our union with Christ’ resurrection. There is a real, physical resurrection to come where union with Christ will be fully realized. At the same time, that physical reality has implications for Christians today. Our union with Christ’s death points forward to how we live our lives now, and our future resurrection points backwards so that we are living in conformity to Christ’s death (dying to our old selves and sin) and living in the power of the resurrection (victory over our old selves and sin). 
▪ That was deeper analysis of 1 verse than usual, but I trust we can walk away with two things: 
• As Christians, your union with Christ gifts you with the identity (in Him) and power (His death and resurrection) to fight sin and overcome it. 
• Doctrines, such as union with Christ, are not just theological jargon that gets thrown around and discussed for the sake of intellectual growth or mental stimulation. The doctrines of the Bible from union with Christ to the Trinity to baptism are meant to be delighted in and provide a foundation for loving God, loving others, and seeking holiness. 
o Paul’s language throughout these verses is not physical but positional. The “old self” in v6 was not physically crucified, but positionally we are moved from the realm of sin to the realm of righteousness. 
o What is meant by the old self? What is the nature of the relationship between old and new self? Was it that the new self was added to the old self at the cross, or was the old self replaced by the new self? 
o The phrase “so that” in v6 can be understood as either purpose or result. It is difficult to determine Paul’s usage here, but contextually is seems to make sense that it is a purpose. God’s intention in having our old selves crucified with Christ is that we are no longer slaves to sin. The gospel has purpose and intention in every aspect and was not some arbitrary thing God put together with no meaning behind His decisions. 
o Vs 7-11 can be summarized as: life is now the reality for those who are united to Christ because Christ in His death and resurrection has defeated sin and death. So, just as Christ lives to God, so too we should live in the reality of being dead to sin and alive to God. 
▪ What does it mean that Jesus “died to sin”? Since He is sinless, did sin have any power over Him? Consider these questions from a salvation-history perspective and what we saw about a change in status from one realm to another. 
o Paul moves to imperatives in vs12-14 which are grounded in the reiteration of the truth statement in v14 that sin no longer has dominion over those who are in Christ. 
o The “mortal body” in v12 may be referring to the physical body but most likely refers to the entire being of a person and represents the existence each believer has in this world and in this age.

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ/Romans 6:5-14 - Pastor Justin Coaxum

Romans 2:12-16 (ESV) 
o Paul’s conclusion in 2:1-11 is that God shows no partiality in his judgment of sin. All people, whether 
Jew or Gentile, will be judged according to their works (v6) with God’s righteousness as the standard 
for perfection. In 2:12-16, Paul is addressing the potential argument that God’s judgment is not fair 
because Gentiles do not have the written law of God like the Jews. 
o “All who have sinned” in Greek is an aorist tense verb. The aorist tense here is being used as an 
indefinite past action. This is pointing out the total sinfulness of both Jews and Gentiles is not based 
on present sinful actions but ultimately on our sinful nature received from Adam (Rom 5:12,19) 
o Judgement of sinners will occur based on their response to the truth that they have access to (v12) so 
that Gentiles will not be judged against their knowledge of Jewish law. 
o Paul explains the reason why (using the word “For”) simply having the law does not provide an 
advantage to the Jews. Rather, only those who perfectly perform all the aspects of the law can be justified (declare righteously). Only Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly and is the only basis for 
justification. We are declared righteous not because of our righteousness but because of Christ’s. 
 Calvin states this idea well, “If righteousness is sought from the law, the law must be fulfilled; for 
the righteousness of the law consists in the perfection of works.” 
o Who is Paul referring to with the term “Gentiles?” Are these Gentiles who have been saved apart 
from the law? Are these non-Christian Gentiles who perform some part of the law? 
o The phrase “by nature” could be translated as instinctively. Paul is making clear that even though 
Gentiles might not have the Mosiac Law they have a natural law “written on their hearts” (v15). 
o Paul is stating explicitly that all humans have knowledge of moral standards that ultimately find their 
foundation in the person of God. 
o The conscience bears witness first to the individual to show them what is right and wrong. Also, 
within the context of the section, the conscience bears witness to the future judgment. No one 
will be able to stand before God and claim ignorance of truth and righteousness when it is imprinted 
on the heart and revealed in the conscience. 
Questions 
o Is it right that God would condemn someone who has never heard the gospel? How do these 
verses address that “problem”? 
o What is the difference between how a non-Christian does moral things (keeps the law) and a 
Christian does moral things (keeps the law)? 
o How do we see natural law in society and culture? How do people show the work of the law on their 
hearts? 
o This will be dealt with more in Rom 14, but how does the conscience work to identify instances of sin 
in our lives? How can we refine and train our conscience to follow Christ’s law (1 Cor 9:19-23)?

through which Paul thanks God for someone. Paul is highlighting the access Jesus provides to God 
through prayer while also showing the common foundation of both Paul’s and the Romans’ faith. 
 How should the phrase “in all the world” in v8 be understood? Is this hyperbole on Paul’s part? 
What can this say generally about faith? Consider Rom 1:5 and the phrase “obedience of faith.” 
o Paul provides more details of his prayer in vv9-10. Usually, Paul’s prayers continue with concerns for 
the readers and spiritual growth, but here Paul makes known his personal prayer is to see them. 
 Paul mentions his service to God and calls to God as his witness of service. In v9, how does Paul 
say that God witnesses his service? 
 Unlike other Pauline writings, this section lacks a clear statement of Paul’s authority or Paul’s 
petition for the Romans to change. Why do you think that is the case? Consider Romans 15:20-22 
o Paul using the word “for” (or because) to introduce his three-fold purpose in visiting Rome: impart 
some spiritual gift (v11), reap some harvest (v13), and preach the gospel (v15). 
o The phrase “spiritual gift” may refer to spiritual gifts mentioned in 1 Cor 12, but more likely, it is 
referring to a Spirit-given ability Paul has to gain insights into their situation and share what would be 
strengthening and encouraging to the Romans. 
o Paul makes clear in v12 there is a mutual benefit, and the phrase “that is” suggests that Paul in a 
sense “corrects” the end of v11. While Paul desires their encouragement, he also desires his own. 
 Does this at all diminish Paul’s words in v11? Is Paul being disingenuous? 
o The phrase “in order that” is a common way for NT writers to express purpose or desired result. In 
this case, Paul is sharing that one of his purposes is to “reap a harvest” among them. 
 What is the harvest Paul talks of, and what is the significance of the phrase “rest of the Gentiles”? 
o The phrase “I am under obligation” literally means I am a debtor, and v15 provides the answer to the 
question “What is Paul’s debt?” 
 Consider Rom 1:1,4-5,14. Usually, a debtor is a person who has received something and needs to 
pay it back. What is Paul a debtor to? Who is Paul a debtor to? How does this apply to us as well? 
o A necessary clarification in case of any confusion: Grace does not make us debtors to God in the 
traditional sense. We are not given grace so now we owe God some repayment of that grace. That 
defeats the purpose of grace. Rather, when grace is given, we are now debtors to those who have 
not heard. We owe it to them to share the grace we have received because no one, including 
ourselves, is worthy of God’s grace. So, we share this grace as a debt to those who are lost.
