Taken from the series KNOW THE TIME
A grain of mustard seed - least of all seeds
It is hot, as of flesh enticing and thrilling religion, a substitute for the true seed
“when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree”
An external spectacular and rather fast growth - Ref. Ezek 31 & Dan 4:20-22 for the symbolic
understanding of the tree, birds and boughs
“Which a man took” - sowed in his field - Probably cain’s way - went away from the presence of
God - also could be “the error of Balaam” [Jude 11]
Involves ‘works’ instead of “Grace”
“And sowed in his field” i.e. this world which is under Satan’s control and authority -Remember
garden of Eden
“the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof” - in the branches of this tree, the
devil’s accomplices lodge
Birds of the air represents worldly powers of evil - comp. prince of the power of the air - Gen 15:11;
Luke 8:5,12; Eph 2:2
These birds of the air took away the good seed in the parable of the sower and therefore evil in its
nature
