It is written, "So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them…And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

LESSON AT A GLANCE

• God changed his mind on the punishment he was going to deliver to Nineveh

• What Repentance is Not…

○ It is not Godly Sorrow… 2 Corinthians 7:9-10

○ It is not Fruits or Works… Matthew 3:7-8

• Works alone do not save your soul, but you need to show proof that you changed your mind and attitude.

• Recognition: You should be able to see that someone has changed

○ Repentance proceeds confession and prayer.

○ Before you confess your fault, you have to had a change of mind.

○ Repentance happens in the mind--you can only see its effect.

○ The Ninevites went through a true process of repentance (see Jonah 3:4-10)

• Repentance is the difference between "I Will" or "I Will Not" … Matthew 21:28-30

○ The first son refused to go, but afterwards, repented and went.

○ The second son said he would go, but went not.

• Understand the Process of Sin… James 1:14-15

○ We all have temptations.

○ Enticement gets your attention.

○ Lust as it grows produces sin.

• To circumvent sin, know your company… 1 Corinthians 15:33

• Don't tell the lie you don't know what I've done… 1 Timothy 1:12-16; Galatians 1:10-16

○ Paul considered himself the chief sinner because of what he did, but also recognized that he obtained redemption through the longsuffering of God.
