How we understand the book of Genesis is a matter of first priority. It’s not a fringe matter, but a core issue. It’s hard to imagine anything more fundamental to our faith than the 1st few verses and the 1st few chapters of God’s precious Word, for it is there that we are served up on a silver platter the answers to some very profound questions:
• where did we come from?
• how did we get here?
• were we created or are we random products of chance?
And if we were created:
• who created us?
• how did it happen?
• where did it happen?
• when did it happen?
These are such important questions and God knows we need to know the answers.
Everyone knows about the painful struggle deep in the hearts of adopted children and foster children who grow up without knowing the answers to their fundamental questions: where they came from, how they got here, what were the circumstances of their birth, who their birth mother and father were, and so on. There’s a very clear similarity here – what you know about where you came from and how you got here impacts everything: your approach to life, your sense of belonging, your confidence, the values you adopt and more.
So believing in “Divine Intervention” (as our Governor General recently commented on) leads in one direction – it produces a particular worldview and a particular set of values about life in general. Evolution leads in another direction entirely – it produces a radically different worldview and a radically different set of values. So, there just isn’t very much that’s more important than the opening pages of the Bible!
Welcome, dear friends, to Home Church Langley!
