There may not be a more important, telling and mystery-solving verse in the entire Bible than Genesis 3:1 which reads, “Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.”
There he is, “that old serpent”. The devil. The deceiver. The liar. He’s not a self-existent creature from eternity past, but a created creature. Elsewhere in the Bible we are told that he was in Heaven, led a rebellion against God, took that rebellion to earth and one day he will most certainly meet his doom. And until that day comes, we have a problem: “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
So how do you explain the world as it is? You can’t – not without the basis of Truth in God’s Word telling us that there is a real devil, with a real agenda built upon revenge, who is bent on attacking God and everything God has made, “killing, stealing and destroying” whatever he possibly can.
This is Genesis and this is history. It is not myth, it is not the stuff of legend, it is not poetry. The presence of a Personified Evil in the world makes “perfect” sense (perfectly EVIL sense); it matches what we know as reality. Why do we believe in God? Because He matches reality. Why do we believe there is a Devil named Satan? Because he matches reality. Why am I a Christian? Because to be a Christian fits with things as they really are. All the evidence is on our side. To reject a Creator God, to reject a malevolent, personified evil, to reject so great a salvation runs contrary to the evidence of reality.
And so, this new series is called “The Reality of Everything: Genesis.”
