The Word of God thru Parables

The Parable of Children in the Marketplace

Luke 7:31-35

The drift of this parable is that the generation of Jesus and John the Baptist is like a group of quarrelsome children playing together in the public marketplace; one group wishing one thing, the other wishing something else, so that any activity with a fixed aim is impossible. Jesus is, of coarse, referring to the Pharisees who are the official interpreters of Mosaic law versus he and John the Baptist who are relatively new on the scene who befriend tax collectors and sinners. The parable ends with a moral axiom (v. 35) that "wisdom is justified of all children."
