On Thursday evening of Holy Week, Jesus gathered with his disciples and their families to celebrate the Passover, a celebration that dated back centuries to the moment that the nation of Israel was born out of bondage in Egypt. In this Passover, however, the true and final 'paschal lamb' would be slain, and his body and blood offered to those who would receive the gift of life and citizenship in his kingdom. The sacred meal set in sharp contrast the faithlessness of Jesus' followers with the faithfulness of their Lord.
