Jesus launched his Galilean ministry in Capernaum, calling his first four disciples from the fishing docks along the shore of the small town. His powerful "Follow Me" summoned men to leave their profession and the new rabbi in an adventure they could scarcely imagine. The following Sabbath, Jesus brought stunning message to the synagogue, delivering words so weighty that the people were struck and amazed at his authority. Mark thus calls our attention to the first of the great themes of his Gospel, the unqualified and weighty authority of this one whose reputation began immediately to spread into the surrounding regions.
