The Lenten period span forty days, from Ash Wednesday until Holy Saturday before Resurrection Sunday. The Lenten season is a time of prayer, fasting, self-examination, and penitence for all Christians as we prepare to celebrate Easter. Through this forty-day journey, we are reminded that we have nothing with which we can obtain salvation and that our best efforts at being righteous fall far short.
1. Magic: Luke 4: 3, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." Luke 4: 4: Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone."
2. Wealth and Power: Luke 4: 5-7. "I will give you all their authority and splendour; it has been given to me, and I can give Luke 4:8: Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only."
3. Equality with God: Luke 4: 9-11. The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the temple's highest point. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here. For it is written: "He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone." Luke 4: 12, Jesus answered, "It is said: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test." It is we who must submit to God, adapt to God, and listen for God's bidding.
