Mark 5:21-43 contains what may be Mark’s most brilliant narrative “sandwich” — it’s a story of healing embedded within a story of healing. We have Jairus, a Jewish leader, who begs Jesus to heal his dying daughter. Jesus agrees, but on His way, a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years touches Jesus’ robe in the crowd and is instantly healed. Then Jesus continues on and miraculously brings Jairus’ daughter back to life again! The movement of the action in Mark 5 is very cool… and adds to the drama of the scene. One has needs, then the other has needs… so what is Jesus to do!?
