A Message about Babylon
Jeremiah 50: 1-10
The context:
Exile has taken place.
What is exile?
God gave Israel, this promised land to the Israelites as their inheritance.
God warned them… (Deu 4:23 -27)
1. Do not forget the covenant
2. Do not make idols
3. Do not become corrupt, doing evil in the eyes of the Lord
4. Do not provoke the Lord to anger
Otherwise…
- You will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.
- You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed.
- The LORD will scatter you
They disobeyed God.
So the time came…
The Babylonians laid siege against them, attacked them and finally captured them and took them into captivity.
Let us take a look at some of the things spoken in this text.
Point 1: Announce and proclaim among the nations
Jer 50 v2-3
Announce and proclaim hope to the people in exile.
--- A nation from the north will attack her.
--- This is an announcement of the fall of Babylon.
The fall of Babylon to Persia will open the door to the return of the exiles.
In the OT --- the people will return to Jerusalem
In the NT --- the king will return to His people, New Jerusalem.
Point 2: Go in tears to seek the Lord
Jer 50 v4
Daniel 9 v1-3
Luke 23 v28-31 - When the Lord Jesus was carrying the Cross
Now is that time…
Now is that weeping time for the daughters of Jerusalem.
Now is the time to plead with him in prayer and petition.
Now is the time to seek Him in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. (humility and repentance)
Point 3: Be bound in the Everlasting Covenant
Jer 50 v5
About The Covenant (11 v. 1-8) 2 weeks ago…
We are a covenant people.
He sealed the covenant at the Communion.
The covenant took place when we accepted the Lord
The term and condition of the covenant. - 1 Pet 1 v14-16
God will put my laws in our minds
He will write His laws on our hearts
He will be our God, and we will be His people.
Heb 8 v11 No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.
Point 4: Beware of False Shepherds
Jer 50 v6 -7
My people are lost sheep…
Reason: Their shepherds have led them astray
The Lord Jesus himself said… Watch out that no one deceives you.
The New Testament talks about false witnesses, false apostles, false prophets, false teachers and false Christs.
Point 5: Flee out of Babylon
Jer 50 v8 -10
4 Flees in the NT…
a. 1 Cor 6 v18 Flee from sexual immorality.
b. 1 Cor 10 v14 Flee from idolatry.
c. 1 Tim 6 v10 -11 Flee from the love of money
d. 2 Tim 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth.
Four things mentioned here…
- godless chatter.
- wickedness.
- foolish and stupid arguments.
- quarrels
