In this sermon (preached from Psalm 15 by Pastor Andrew Ray), we learn of a high standard of righteousness, met only by the Lord Jesus Christ. The message is titled "A Song of Righteousness" and is part of a larger expository study through The Book of Psalms.

Notes:

A Song of Righteousness
Psalm 15:1-5

I. THE QUESTIONS PRESENTED (Psalm 15:1)

A. The Participants in the Questions

1. The one asking—David
2. The one receiving—LORD

B. The Focus of the Questions

1. The person—“who” and “who”
2. The time—“shall” and “shall”
3. The action—“abide” and “dwell”
4. The place—“thy tabernacle” and “thy holy hill”
5. Note: This should be an early hint in the psalm that the context involves something greater than an Old Testament saint.

II. THE ANSWERS STATED (Psalm 15:2-5)

A. A Right Walk (Psalm 15:2)

1. He walks uprightly.
2. He works righteousness.
3. He speaks truth in his heart.

B. A Right Fellowship (Psalm 15:3-5)

1. He does not backbite with his tongue (Psalm 15:3).
2. He does no evil to his neighbour (Psalm 15:3).
3. He does not take up a reproach against his neighbour (Psalm 15:3).
4. He contemns the vile person (Psalm 15:4).
5. He honours them that fear the LORD (Psalm 15:4).
6. He swears to his own hurt, and refuses to change (Psalm 15:4).
7. He puts not out his money to usury (Psalm 15:5).
8. He does not take reward against the innocent (Psalm 15:5).

C. A Biblical Perspective

1. Unfortunately, there are some that use the above verses to support the position of a works-based salvation for Old Testament people.
2. To hold such a position is to disregard some clear teaching from scripture.
3. To hold such a position is to do so with fictitious characters who never existed in Old Testament history.
4. The only person who could entirely fit the description is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. One should give special consideration to how Christ swore to His own hurt regarding becoming man’s sacrifice for sins and refused to go back on that promise.

III. THE CONCLUSION PRESENTED (Psalm 15:5)

A. The Man

1. His work—“He that doeth”
2. His association—“these things”

B. The Outcome

1. The certainty of his outcome—“shall never”
2. The stedfastness of his outcome—“never be moved”
