What your eyes have seen do not hastily bring into court, for what will you do in the end, when your neighbor puts you to shame? — Proverbs 25:7-8

This verse caught my attention because of how fast we rush to judgment today. Fueled by emotion, this world has erupted with accusations against people on every side. One person makes one judgment. Another person makes a counter judgment. And then a fight breaks out. And we have witnessed this in cities, stores, subways, and planes across the world.

Yet this verse is not an indictment against making moral judgments. It assumes that a wise man will use discernment and make moral judgments. The warning of this text is only about rushing to judgment. Rushing to judgment and establishing a case too quickly without gathering all the evidence.

Wise men know this because they are discerning. They know that when emotions run high, accusations are made. So the wise man never gets hooked by these accusations. Instead, he slows his mind and gathers evidence because he knows that if he too is too quick to judge that this would bring a judgment of shame to himself.

ASK THIS: Do you need discernment?

DO THIS: Slow your mind and be discerning.

PRAY THIS: God, give me discernment.
