Our Father, you are the God of truth who cannot lie, who keeps his word, who fulfills the terms of his covenant. All the promises you perform and the saints you do not deceive. To our shame we have sinned by offering worship that is insincere. How often with our lips have we given you honor while the focus of our hearts has been far from you? We have been like Israel of old who walked in the wilderness while dreaming of Egypt. Not a few times have we sung your praise, offered you prayer, and confessed the faith with little thought and less affection. O how pervasive is the leaven of the Pharisees! Time and again we have acknowledged sin without shame, rendered tribute without thanks, and listened quietly without a due sense of gravitas. We are indebted to your mercy and beholden to your grace, yet strangely filled with pride and self-conceit. May your Spirit help us to fasten on the belt of truth and ascribe worth to your name with sincerity, fervency, gravity, and love. Please forgive us for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

*Confession of Faith: The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell;**
The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
** i.e. his being buried, and continuing in the state of the dead, and under the power of death till the third day.
