The magistrates wanted Paul and Silas to be let go but Paul demanded an apology because he was a Roman citizen. They had arrested and beat him without a trial which was illegal to do to a Roman citizen. The magistrates came and apologized to Paul and asked him to leave town. After encouraging the new church in Philippi, Paul and Silas left.
