1. The final EXHORTATION intentionally includes their history.
Vs. 1-13
1) The DESIGNATED city for this address is no accident.
They came “to Shechem” (v. 1).
The very name pulsates with significance in the Old Testament story.
It was here, at the oak of Moreh, that the Lord appeared to Abram and promised to give the land to his offspring (Genesis 12:6, 7). It was here that Jacob bought a piece of land from the sons of Hamor. Genesis 33:18–20

2) the DESCENDANTS of Abraham are mentioned.
Vs. 2-4
“The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham,”
Acts 7:2
Eventually Isaac was born, then Jacob and Esau.
We know from the start of Exodus that their condition seemed beyond hope, and then suddenly verse 5 bursts into focus—
“I sent Moses and Aaron.”

2) The DAYS they spent in Egypt
Vs. 5-9
God sent Joseph ahead to Egypt to preserve the nation during the famine (Ps. 105:16–22), and then He sent Moses and Aaron to deliver the nation from bondage (vv. 23–45).

3) The DESTRUCTION of the Amorites
Vs. 8
Remember these were giants who lived in the mountains.
It was these famous victories that also struck fear into the hearts of the people of Jericho (Joshua 2:10, 11).

4) The DECEPTION of Balaam
Vs. 9-10
There was also another deliverance from a more hidden and subtle foe, the false prophet Balaam.
Numbers 22–24 , Romans 8:31–39

5) The DELIVERANCE of Jericho
Vs. 11
The list of enemies in verse 11 is impressive and daunting, but now they know that, “I gave them into your hand” (v. 11b).

2. The ESSENTIAL element must be to remain committed to the Lord.
Vs. 14-28
1) There is a personal CHALLENGE from Joshua.
Vs. 14-15
One of the key words in this section is serve, used fifteen times.
Joshua made it clear that the people of Israel had to make a decision to serve the Lord God of Israel.

2) The COUNCIL from Joshua is received by the people.
Vs. 16-18
-1 There is a RESPONSE of loyalty
The logic is impeccable. If the Lord is your God, then it is total folly not to serve him. Matthew 6:24

-2 There is a remembrance of their RESCUE from Egypt
Vs. 17
This was the destruction of the pantheon of gods that were in Egypt.
1 Cor 15:54-58

3) The COVENANT agreement is renewed again.
Vs. 19-28
-1 The DANGERS that Joshua told the people about
Vs. 19
Joshua is in essence telling them,
“What you have promised is impossible.”

The rest of the verse explains what he means. God is “holy” and “jealous.”

-2 The DISCIPLINE that is need.
Vs. 22
Joshua accepts their choice and calls them to witness against themselves that this is the solemn resolve to which they have come, which they do

3. The EXAMPLE of three great leaders.
Vs. 29-33
1) The LEGACY of Joshua continued for a period of time.
Vs. 29-31
At the age of 110 Joshua dies and is buried in his own personal part of the land at Timnath-serah, in Ephraim (vv. 29, 30).

2) The LAST request of Joseph to be buried in the land.
Vs. 32
Gen 50:24-25, Heb 11:22
3) The LEADER over the Levites is buried.
Vs. 33
The third grave is that of Eleazar, who had been to Joshua as Aaron had been to Moses, also buried in the north country of Ephraim, where his son, Phinehas, lived (v. 33).
