HE TEACHINGS AND PARABLES OF JESUS
Calm the Storm, Mark 4:35-41
Key Verse: v. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
Background: Jesus just finished spending the day teaching and performing miracles. During the evening, He asks the disciples to cross over to the other side of the lake. While on the water, a storm approaches and the disciples are frightened. Verse 37, shares about the fierceness of the storm. It was sudden and violent. There were heavy winds and waves that crashed over the boat.
During this time, Jesus is sleeping in the stern of the boat. He is peaceful and at such a state of rest that the disciples have to shake him awake. Their conversation with Jesus is desperate, full of fear and doubt.
Despite their fears, Jesus calms the storm on their behalf. He honors their request by speaking to the storm first, followed by a discussion of their faith.
Ice Breaker: What is the first activity you plan to engage in after our time of sheltering in place is complete?
Discuss:
1. This is a teaching on faith. Read Hebrews 11:1. What is the definition of faith?
2. Share a time when you demonstrated faith during a major storm in your life.
3. Read Mark 4:39-40. What did Jesus do first when he was awakened by the disciples?
4. Why is it difficult to trust God when He's proven himself over and over in our lives?
5. Discuss your plans to stay engaged in God's word over the summer.
Challenge:
List the areas of your life where you are worried. After making your list, find scriptures that speak to your current need. Meditate on those verses throughout the week.
