Focus: Spiritual leadership
Text: 2 Timothy 2:14 – 19

WARNING AGAINST PEOPLE WHO CLAIM TO TEACH THE WORD OF GOD
(2 Timothy 2:14 – 18)

1. They offer alternative views of Biblical doctrine

2. They strive about words to no profit

3. They are NOT people who rightly divide the word of truth

4. They promote their message and spread it like cancer

5. They have strayed from the word of truth

6. They have ruined the faith of others who hear them!

THE FIRM FOUNDATION OF GOD

“Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands” 2 Timothy 2:19a

1. “Nevertheless”

a. A contrast to those who have strayed

b. An assurance that what God builds will stand firm!

2. “The solid foundation of God”

a. The work of God (1 Corinthians 3:9 – 10)

i. Where God is the builder

ii. Where the Apostles are His fellow workers

b. The solid foundation of God stands

i. The foundation of God for the Church has been laid

ii. This foundation is solid (cf. Ephesians 2:20)

iii. This foundation of God stands and will continue to stand firm!






THE SEAL OF GOD

“Having this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are His,’ and ‘Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity’” 2 Timothy 2:19b

1. A seal marks authenticity

2. The seal of God upon His work!

a. The LORD knows those who are His

i. God sees through those who are false

ii. God knows exactly who are His and who are not His

iii. God is working in the lives of those who are His!

b. Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity

i. Those who profess faith in the name of Christ

ii. Their life must reflect their profession of faith

iii. They will depart from a life of iniquity!

GREAT CHALLENGES

1. To develop greater knowledge of God!

a. To discern truth

b. To stand firm on the foundation of God’s word!

2. To reject that which is wrong and false

a. That which is NOT of God

b. That which is NOT from the truth of God’s word

c. That which is sinful
