Title: Vital lessons on evangelism

INTRODUCTION

1. The example of the Lord Jesus in practicing evangelism

a. He ministered to individuals

b. He spoke to crowds

2. The challenge of ministering to a crowd

a. This can be very challenging depending on the makeup of the crowd

b. Those who resist and sow doubts makes things even harder!

THE COMPLAINTS OF THE JEWS

1. Identification of “ The Jews”

a. They were the religious leaders (John 1:19)

b. Some were chief priests

c. Some were the scribes

d. They were not there to learn from the Lord Jesus

e. They were sowing discord and doubt in the crowd!

2. They complained about what Jesus said (John 6:41 – 42)

a. That He is the Bread of life

b. That He came down from heaven

c. They see Him as just a man

i. They know His parents Joseph and Mary

ii. They were not impressed with who Jesus is!



ANSWERING THEIR COMPLAINTS

1. Don’t murmur among yourselves (John 6:43)

a. If they genuinely do not understand they could raise it up with Jesus Himself

b. They could clarify with Jesus what He said

c. By murmuring among themselves they would make things worse

2. Coming to Jesus (John 6:44 – 46)

a. No one can even come to Jesus unless God draws him

b. These are the genuine believers whom the Lord will raise up in the last day

c. The prophets spoke about a day when God would teach His people directly!

i. In the past God spoke to His people through His prophets

ii. In the last day God would speak through His Son!

iii. Those who are truly taught by God will come to the Lord Jesus Christ!

iv. The Lord Jesus is the unique Son of God who has seen the Father!

3. A clear statement of salvation

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.” John 6:47

a. There must be a clear faith in Jesus

b. Only through faith in Jesus can one possess everlasting life with God in heaven!

4. Jesus explains that He is the “Bread of Life”

a. Those who perish in the wilderness (John 6:48 – 50)

i. Their forefathers who ate Manna in the wilderness

ii. They saw the signs of God and yet they did not truly believe in Him

iii. Hence they perished in the wilderness



b. The opportunity to learn from the past! (John 6:51)

i. They have Jesus as “The living Bread” sent from heaven!

ii. The opportunity to “Eat of this bread”!

iii. The bread is His flesh which is given as an atonement for sin!

iv. This is their opportunity to receive Jesus into their hearts with faith!

v. They would be given eternal life and not perish like their forefathers!

GREAT CHALLENGES

1. To learn from all the mistakes Israel made in the past

a. The LORD taught Israel many precious truth

b. The LORD provided Manna for them in the wilderness

c. Yet they did not believe in Him but complained among themselves!

d. The Jews could not see that they were making the same mistake!

2. To believe in the Lord Jesus Christ

a. To draw near the Lord

b. To learn many precious truths

c. To feed on the Lord as the living Bread from heaven!

i. He gives us life!

ii. He nourishes us!

iii. He sustains us!
