A DEFECTIVE UNDERSTANDING OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

1. This will not result in God’s blessings

2. This will harm the fellowship of the Church

3. This will not honor the name of the Lord

4. This will lead people astray

DEVELOPING A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

1. There are diversities in spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4 – 6)

a. Different ministries in the Church

b. Different activities (works) in the Church

2. The same God is involved in all (1 Corinthians 12:4 – 6)

a. Same Spirit of God

b. Same Lord Jesus Christ

c. Same God and Father

3. Manifestation of the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 12:7b)

a. Manifestation

i. To reveal

ii. To make known

b. The Spirit of God is manifested in the spiritual gifts that has been imparted!

i. His empowerment to serve the Lord effectively

ii. His anointing for ministry

iii. His confirmation for ministry

iv. His leading in life and ministry

4. For the profit of all (1 Corinthians 12:7b)

a. Spiritual gifts are imparted not just for personal benefits

b. It was given for the profit of the whole church!

i. That the Church may be greatly blessed

ii. That the Church is ministered to

5. A variety of spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:8 – 10)

a. The word of wisdom

b. The word of knowledge

c. Faith as a spiritual gift

d. Spiritual gifts that were present during the apostolic era (Not today)

i. Healings

ii. Working of miracles

iii. Prophecy

iv. Discerning of spirits

v. Different kinds of tongues

vi. Interpretation of tongues

6. An important note (1 Corinthians 12:11)

a. The SAME Spirit of God emphasized

i. As we know of in the Scriptures

ii. As taught by the Lord Jesus Christ

iii. As explained by the Apostles

b. It is the same Spirit of God who works in all these things

i. He imparts the variety of spiritual gifts

ii. He empowers the servant of God with one or more gifts to minister effectively

iii. He distributes to each of God’s servants spiritual gifts according to His will!

PERSONAL APPLICATION

1. To gain a better understanding of the works of the Holy Spirit concerning spiritual gifts

2. To identify and develop the spiritual gifts that God has given to us for His glory!
