Placing our focus beyond Calvary, we return to the African gospel writer, John Mark, as he now shifts our focus to the cross. In doing so, Mark calls our attention to an African who was drafted to carry the cross of Jesus, an African who participated in the pain of Jesus, an African who would be the first person to take up a cross and follow Jesus. The cost of discipleship is summarized by carrying your cross. This African, Simon of Cyrene, demonstrated the directives of discipleship by sharing a cross sharing with Jesus. God calls us to cross bearers and cross-sharers. What will you do with Jesus? Must Jesus bear the cross alone? Must Simon bear the cross alone?
