“A Call to Christian Citizenship”
Proverbs 29:2


1. There has been a CHANGE from the values of our founders.

1a. The ORIGINAL documents tell a different story than we hear today.

1) Did you know that the first representative assembly in America convened in the church at Jamestown in 1619,

2) When the Pilgrims came one year later in 1620,
they decided to draw up their own self-governing document, the first created in America, called the Mayflower Compact.

3) Did you know that Connecticut is called the Constitution state because the first Constitution in America was enacted in 1639.


4) Did you know that the first education law was passed in Massachusetts in 1641 for the purpose of ensuring that children would be able to read and understand the scriptures?

5) Did you know that the first university in America , Harvard, was named for Reverend John Harvard,

6) Did you know that the first hospitals in America were founded mostly by Christians?[6]

7) Did you know that it was the Quakers in Pennsylvania and Puritan ministers of New England who led the fight against slavery in America ?[7]

8) Did you know that 93% of our founding fathers who voted for the Declaration of Independence and crafted our Constitution were professing Orthodox Christians?[8]

John Adams, our second President, clarified that when he declared that
“The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were… the general principles of Christianity.”[10]


1b. A change has OCCURRED in our understanding of how our government was formed.

In fact, representative government is based upon
Exodus 18:21
Our system of checks and balances between the branches of government is based on the doctrine of the sinfulness of man (Rom. 3:23 ).
In fact, the three branches come from Isaiah 33:22:

2. We have been COMMANDED by Jesus to influence the culture.
2a. We must not lose our INFLUENCE in the culture.
Matt 5:13-16

2b. We are to be INVOLVED since it is God who has established government.
Government is one of the 3 institutions God established.
 The other two are marriage and the church.
Romans 13:1


3. The CHALENGE to influence our culture includes politics.
3a. We must PARTICIPATE while our vote will still count.

A study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life a few years ago showed that 62% of Americans say their faith has little to do with their voting decisions.[13]

3b. The PREMISE of our values must be based on the Bible.
Obviously, Christian "rulers" would have Christian values, right? Not necessarily.

3c. There are values that must be a PRIORITY.

1) The Value of Human Life
Ps 139:15-16
According to the Declaration of Independence,
"All men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. Among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Prov. 24:11-12
Proverbs 6:16 -17—
God hates the shedding of innocent blood!

2) The Value of Traditional Family
Marriage between one man and one woman is essential.
The family is the basic building block of society, and the first institution created by God.
Genesis 1:27:

In both OT and NT, one man and one woman in a marriage covenant relationship for life is the divine pattern.

It is stated clearly in the word of God.
Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13a says:
Jesus essentially condemned homosexuality by affirming the divine pattern for marriage.
In Matthew 19:4-6

This sacred institution is under attack.
The Supreme Court decision to legalizing same-sex marriage was a case of legislating from the bench.

3) The Value of Religious Freedom
One of the most basic of freedoms fought for and won is found in the First Amendment:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."[25]
