Luke 20: 1-19
“The Question of Authority”
1. It was PROPER for the authority of Jesus to be questioned.
Vs. 1-2
1) It was because they were in a POSITION to question Him.
Notice also that this is a official group representing the
Sanhedrin. This was a proper question for them to ask.
2) It was because of His PREACHING and teaching in the temple.
Vs. 1
3) It was because of the PHENOMENON that was part of His ministry.
Vs. 2
o These things certainly include cleansing the temple.
o Jesus had basically called them thieves.
John 2: 13-21
2. Jesus replies with a question about a PROPHET.
Vs. 3-8
1) Most of the POPULATION of Southern Israel had been baptized by John.
John had baptized most of the population of southern Israel.
Most of the people believed that he was the forerunner of the Messiah. They believed that he was a prophet sent from God.
2) John’s ministry PRESENTED a dilemma for their question of authority.
Their dilemma is rooted in unbelief. This official delegation refused to answer him and so Jesus will not answer their question.
3. Jesus tells a PARABLE to make his point.
Vs. 9-16
1) Israel is REPRESENTED by the vineyard.
Vs. 9
Ps 80: 8-9, Isa 5: 1-2
Isaiah’s Song of the Vineyard was about the failure of the vineyard, Jesus’ parable would be about the failure of the leaders of the vineyard/Israel.
2) Israel’s leaders had REJECTED the messengers that had been sent.
Matt 23: 31-36
Was it “Just” for Jesus to make such a statement to that generation?
What would he say to our generation?
Acts 7: 9, Acts 7: 25, Acts 7: 35
When did they finally accept Moses?
When he came a second and defeated their enemies.
Acts 7: 52
3) In a last RESORT the owner would send his Son.
Luke is hoping we will not miss the language used here.
“'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son.”
This is a deliberate echo of God the Father’s voice at Jesus’ baptism: "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased."
Luke 3: 22
4) Israel’s corrupt leadership would be REMOVED, and the entire nation would suffer the consequences.
Vs. 16
In 70 A.D. the temple and the city were destroyed and this corrupt leadership was destroyed as well.
4. The POSITION of Jesus as Messiah is seen in scripture.
Vs. 17-20
1) Jesus quotes a PROPHETIC passage as an ultimatum.
Vs. 17
What should THE chief cornerstone mean to us?
-1 It is the ROCK OF OUR SALVATION. Acts 4: 11-12
-2 It is the ROCK of OUR FOUNDATION Eph 2: 19-20
-3 It is the ROCK OF REJECTION
-4 It is the ROCK OF DESTRUCTION
The first part of vs. 18 comes from Isaiah 8: 14, 15. The second part of vs. 18 comes from Dan 2: 31-35 and Dan 2: 44-45
In the Old Testament, the “stone” is a familiar symbol of God and of the promised Messiah (see Gen. 49: 24; Ex. 17: 6; 33: 22; Deut. 32: 4, 15, 30–31; Isa. 8: 14; 28: 16; 1 Cor. 10: 4).
2) The corrupt leadership continue their PLOT to destroy Him.
Vs. 19
The Messianic Kingdom is postponed.
It would now be entered by individuals and not by the nation.
