Hymns for Palm Sunday

Opening hymn # 9, v. 1-3, “O Day of Rest and Gladness”

1. O day of rest and gladness, O day of joy and light,
O balm of care and sadness, Most beautiful, most bright,
On thee the high and lowly, Before th' eternal throne
Sing, "Holy, holy, holy," To the great Three in One.

2. On thee at the Creation, The light first had its birth;
On thee for our salvation, Christ rose from depth of earth;
On thee our Lord victorious, The Spirit sent from heaven,
And thus on thee, most glorious, A threefold light was given.

3. Thou art a cooling fountain, In life's dry, dreary sand;
From thee, like Nebo's mountain, We view our Promised Land;
A day of sweet reflection, A day of holy love,
A day of resurrection, From earth to things above.

Sermon hymn # 162, “Ride on, Ride on, in Majesty”

1. Ride on, ride on, in majesty! Hark! all the tribes hosanna cry.
0 Savior meek, pursue Thy road, With palms and scattered garments strowed.

2. Ride on, ride on, in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die.
0 Christ, Thy triumphs now begin, O'er captive death and conquered sin.

3. Ride on, ride on, in majesty! The angel armies of the sky
Look down with sad and wondering eyes, To see the approaching Sacrifice.

4. Ride on, ride on, in majesty! Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh;
The Father on His sapphire throne, Expects His own anointed Son.

5. Ride on, ride on, in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die.
Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain. Then take, 0 Christ, Thy power and reign.

Hymn # 161, Hosanna, loud Hosanna

1. Hosanna, loud hosanna, The little children sang;
Through pillared court and Temple, The lovely anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them, Close folded to His breast,
The children sang their praises, The simplest and the best.

2. From Olivet they followed, Mid an exultant crowd,
The victor palm-branch waving, And chanting clear and loud.
The Lord of men and angels, Rode on in lowly state
Nor scorned that little children, Should on His bidding wait.

3. "Hosanna in the highest!" That ancient song we sing,
For Christ is our Redeemer, The Lord of heaven our King.
Oh, may we ever praise Him, With heart and life and voice
And in His blissful presence, Eternally rejoice.

Closing Hymn: # 656, v. 1, “Behold a Host, Arrayed in White”

1Behold a host, arrayed in white, Like thousand snow-clad mountainsbright,
With palms they stand. Who is this band, Before the throne of light?
Lo, these are they of glorious fame, Who from the great affliction came
And in the flood of Jesus' blood, Are cleansed from guilt and blame.
Now gathered in the holy place, Their voices they in worship raise,
Their anthems swell where God doth dwell, Mid angels' songs of praise.
