Paul goes into great detail about the eternal nature of Jesus, emphasizing His deity and relationship to the Father. He follows that with a detailed explanation of His redemptive and reconciling work on the cross, in chapter 1. We do not know why Paul makes these and other matters so much the focus for those in Colosse, but they are needless to say vital that the believers there must know them. It is speculated there were those attacking the very topics Paul settles in this epistle.

So it is for us today. As has been said before, the cults of our day must attack the eternal nature of Jesus, and diminish His sacrificial work for the sin of mankind. Paul makes clear that Jesus not only reconciled man through the forgiveness of sin, for those who believe, but that His work will ultimately reconcile and re-order the whole of creation.

This is a masterful defense of the most elemental parts of the Christian faith and it is vital we know these truths.
