Every believer, and even some who do not believe know this, Jesus died for the sin of the world. People may or may not believe it, but they know the story.

When Paul takes up the topic in this section, he adds so much depth and imagery that what we believe about what Jesus did takes on a whole new meaning. There must have been good reason for Paul to speak so forcefully and thoroughly. We know from what he said there were those in Colosse who were introducing dangerous doctrines. Among them was a mix of keeping aspects of the Law and subjecting people to things which could never save.

As a response Paul reaffirms the genuine understanding of who Jesus is, (His eternal state, and not a created being) what He accomplished and why. Paul even corrects those who would deceive claiming mystical revelation.

It is vital that churches through the ages know the genuine from the counterfeit and Paul helps to keep things as they should be with Biblical understanding.
