Part of an ongoing series of evidence presented by Greg Stafford to show why so many people believe Jesus is the biblical Messiah. This episode considers the text of Malachi 3:1-3, to which the earliest witness is from the Dead Sea Scrolls’ Minor Prophets text of 4Q76, a fragment of which is shown in the thumbnail to this video. It is dated to around 150 to 125 BCE, over 150 to 200 years before Jesus was accepted as the Messiah by Jewish and non-Jewish Christians.

In this text we are told about a “messenger” who would “clear up a way before” Jaho(h)-ah, after which “the Lord” (ha adohn), who appears also to be called, “the messenger of the covenant,” to “sit as a refiner and cleanser of silver” and to “cleanse the sons of Le'vi,” so they become “people presenting a gift offering in righteousness.”

Who is the first messenger, the one who ‘clears up a way’ before God? Who is “the Lord,” also called, “the messenger of the covenant”? As we will show in this video, these texts from Malachi find a unique fulfillment in John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth in the New Testament, with no other options in Jewish history anywhere near as capable of such a fulfillment. Hence, Malachi 3:1-3 offers further pre-Christian evidence that Jesus is the biblical Messiah.
