Light and darkness. Right from the beginning of creation, as the writer of Genesis 1-2 reflects on it, light is separated from the darkness. Both day and night are part of God’s good creation. Yet within a few paragraphs we are told that a different kind of darkness enters God’s world, which is filled with light and life. It’s not the physical night, with the beauty of the stars and the brightness of the moon. It’s a spiritual darkness. Suddenly, humans found themselves attracted to the less than the lovely; the dishonest; the harmful; the dark. It becomes our default setting, and we struggle to overcome our tendency to choose darkness over light. Jesus himself said it when Nicodemus came to visit Him by night (Night is significant).
John 3:19. “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world and men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil”.
