But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. - 2 Corinthians 4:7, NKJV

Have you ever felt insignificant? Weak? Useless?

I think we've all had those days.... those days when we think that there is no way that a holy and perfect God could possibly even stand us, much less love us.

Those days when Satan hounds us with every misspoken word, bad decision, broken promise... and we know that every accusation is 100% true.

Well, that's actually pretty common with people who God not only loved... but called to serve Him.

* Noah was considered the last righteous man on earth. Then he got drunk and slept naked.
* Abraham, the forefather of the Jewish people and through them, to all people of faith... let other men walk off with his wife, not once but twice.
* Sarah told her husband to sleep with another woman... and then hated her for it.
* Rebekah was a manipulative wife and mother.
* Jacob was a pathological liar.
* Rachel was a nomadic kleptomaniac.
* Moses doubted God, told Him to pick someone else, stuttered and... oh yeah, killed a guy.
* Aaron, a man who had watched God triumph over Pharaoh, formed an idol of gold for the Israelites to worship.
* Eli, the priest who raised Samuel, was a totally incompetent father to his own sons.
* Saul was a psychotic individual with clearly bipolar tendencies who committed suicide.
* David tried to cover up adultery... by committing murder.
* Solomon had over 1,000 wives. (Wisest man on earth... really? 1,000 wives???)

And the list goes on... and on... and on...

We are all flawed. We are all broken. But the good part is... it's not about us.

As the old phrase goes: "God doesn't call the qualified. He qualifies the called." Earthenware vessels were not a costly vessel. They were ordinary. Common. And yet, they were also very useful. Their value lay not in what they were made of or how beautiful they were but rather with what was inside them.

So, yes, struggle against your sins. But understand that we don't have to be perfect to serve God. He loves us despite our flaws. It isn't our effort or worthiness that will make the difference. God will fill us with His Spirit ... not because we deserve it... but to demonstrate His glory and goodness.

How can I pray for you today?
