Most people believe Jesus was killed on a cross, usually with his feet over each other and a nail through both of them. But archaeology (see video link below) shows this was not likely the case. Rather, the feet of the executed person were apparently put on each side of the base of a pole or straight up piece of wood, and a nail put through each foot from the side. But what about the upper body?

While we do not have evidence from archaeology showing how the hands were nailed, there is an account in the Bible book of Numbers 21:8-9, which Jesus quotes and applies to himself in John 3:14-15, that may help us to answer the question: Was Jesus executed on an upright pole or stake with his arms straight up and nailed to each side of the pole, or on a cross with his arms outstretched?

While we may not know for certain, the evidence does seem to point in one direction...
