When you sit down to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite. Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food. — Proverbs 23:1-3

What this very vivid proverb proclaims is that we need to be careful when cutting a deal with someone of influence. Because the deal you cut may end up cutting you. And this is because a person of power and influence always wants something in return. They never give out of generosity. It may look like generosity, but it's not. Much of the time, they want something in return and more than you will get. And this is the deception. You think you will get a lot, but they are going to get a lot more. It's always the person in need who gets the small cut of the deal.

So watch the deals you cut with people of power and influence. Be wise. And figure out what they want.

ASK THIS: Is there a deal you are about to cut that you need to rethink?

DO THIS: Think it through so you don't get cut.

PRAY THIS: Father, give me wisdom, discernment, and insight, so I don't get cut.

PLAY THIS: Generous Giver.
