A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's Day morning March 15th 1863
Here Spurgeon deals with the theme of thankfulness. Part way through the sermon he tells us his own reason for thankfulness on that day. He ascribes all glory, not to man, but to the living God.
He refers at 15:04 to the terrible events at the Surrey Gardens Music Hall, when pranksters shouted “Fire!” and in the ensuing stampede, eight people were crushed to death. This event cast a long shadow over Spurgeon and led to great depression of spirit. More details can be seen here: http://victoriancalendar.blogspot.com/2011/10/october-19-1856-surrey-gardens-tragedy.html
Spurgeon speaks openly of human failings, and fears; also of the victories obtained by our suffering, and now exalted, Saviour Jesus.
