We are continuing our series on Romans ch.8-11, and this video tackles the complexities of Romans 8: 5-13. What is the Flesh, and what does it do? What is the role of the Holy Spirit? How might an Apocalyptic reading make sense of the entire passage? What is an Apocalyptic reading in the first place?

By focusing on 'apocalyptic antinomies,' I argue Paul is more concerned in Rom 8: 5-13 with establishing the sovereign realm of the Spirit as opposed to the oppressive regime of Death, Sin, and the Flesh. In essence, we are not talking about the tension of the Christian life per se, but rather we are fundamentally talking about regime change. We are talking about eschatological life, and the apocalyptic Spirit.

The realm of the Spirit is the apocalyptic antithetic new reality that challenges, usurps, and ultimately destroys all opposing concepts that are hostile to God. The Sovereignties are embattled, embittered, and finally deposed as the lawless rulers that no longer enslave humanity.

My translation:

8:5 For the ones existing in the flesh have set their minds on the things of the flesh, but the ones of the Spirit on the things of the Spirit. 8:6 For the mind of the Flesh is Death, but the mind of the Spirit is Life and peace. 8:7 For the mind of the Flesh is antagonistic toward God, for it does not yield itself to the law of God because it is powerless. 8:8 The ones living in the Flesh are powerless to please God. 8:9 But you are not in the Flesh but in the Spirit if indeed the Spirit of God resides in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, that person is not of him. 8:10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of Sin, the Spirit is Life because of righteousness. 8:11 If the Spirit that raised Jesus from death lives among you, the one raising Christ from among the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who lives in you. 8:12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, you are debtors, not to the Flesh to live according to the Flesh. 8:13 For if you live according to the Flesh you will die, but if with the Spirit you put to death the exploits of the body, you will live.
